A beautiful romance with parallel stories
By D. Merrimon Crawford
THE LETTER by Elizabeth Blackwell is a beautiful romance from the unique Harlequin Everlasting Love line which tells the story of a lifetime of love as a one character searches the details of her grandmother's life. The reader sees beyond the happily ever after ending of the romance genre though being able to witness a romance lived through decades.
Cassie Armstrong finds a letter in her grandmother's quilting supplies, a passionate love letter written to her grandmother and signed by two initials, F.B. She was told her grandparents were childhood sweethearts so who is this mysterious F.B.? How did her grandmother end up with Henry, a man steady and calm in demeanor? Cassie hunts for the answers by exploring her grandmother Lydia's past and as she does so, Cassie questions her relationship to her fiance, Cooper Lynch. Cassie doesn't know how to do pleasure very well. She is all business 24/7. She doesn't even have time to plan her own wedding! She and her fiance constantly miss each other as they jet off to take care of business, but are they missing what is most important? Can discovering the truth about her grandmother, and in fact herself, make her look within to her heart's desire? As Cassie discovers the secrets of her grandmother's life, everything she once knew takes on a different understanding, including her own romance. Elizabeth Blackwell's gift of characterization shines in the main romance between Lydia and Henry. While Cassie hunts for the details of Lydia's life and the mysterious F.B. the reader becomes drawn into Lydia's life alongside Cassie.
THE LETTER is a beautiful romance both in terms of the story itself and manner in which the author presents the story through parallel romances. The alternating narrative in creating a parallel between Lydia and Cassie, creating a depth of emotion that expands beyond a single character to another generation. The unforgettable ending is just poignant and tear-inspiring! Although the author has written several articles for magazines, this is her first novel and what an amazing debut novel it is!
THE LETTER is a wonderful romance that warms the heart and brings a tear to the eye with the touching, unexpected detail at the ending. For readers who quilt, this romance is a must read!

A true love story with a timeless message.
By FogCityBookGal
This was such a great story about a gal who's about to dive into her own love story when she finds one from the past to inspire or deter her. You aren't really sure until the very end of The Letter if the love letter she finds in her grandma's quilting box will inspire her to leap into love or snap out of it and find a new Mr. Right.
I loved the quest she embarked on to find out who wrote the letter and why. True, she could have just asked her grandma who wrote it, but then we wouldn't have been able to go on the journey with her. This tale was written in a similar way to The Notebook, but with a much happier ending.
I enjoyed how the author let us see from her grandma's point of view and trickled in information slowly through her grandma's eyes as she found clues. I liked how the letter changed the heroine's life. Anyone who has stumbled upon a note or stack of letters from an old relative knows the sense of wonder and reverence these things take on in your life. I enjoyed watching the lead character explore (as I would) to find out who wrote such a great note. The revelation is truly heart-warming.
I also liked how the letter and what she found out about it by researching, helped her make decisions not only about her love life, but her career and goals in life. It had much more impact on her than her grandma just saying, "Live for today, dear! Learn from my mistakes!" I think she had to discover her grandma's life through the letter and the clues it left to really make an impact on her life.
Great read. A true love story with a timeless message.

Communication is the Key to Happiness
By L. B. Taylor
THE LETTER was unusual in its set-up. It encompassed two separate times within one family but running parallel with each other. Miss Blackwell had each odd chapter devoted to Cassie, the granddaughter, in the present moment. The even chapters take Lydia, Cassie's grandmother, to the 1930's and beyond. Normally I am not fond of this method of writing but for some reason in THE LETTER, it worked.
It all began when Cassie, concerned with her life, found a letter from an unknown man signed F.B. He had pledged his love to Lydia. It would not have been a problem except Lydia had been married for over 50 years to Henry Armstrong, her one and only love. Cassie was both fascinated and intrigued; she wanted to find out more.
Along the way, Cassie began to have doubts about her engagement. Successful and smart, she started to think that her own life was dull. She realized she knew very little about what her fiancee, Cooper, thought and felt. And was he happy with her? Driving everything was a fragile piece of paper with words spoken from the heart many years ago.
This story was more women's fiction than romance. It is not time-travel, either. Instead, it is about memories and how they shape you. It is about choices and how they affect you. It is about finding that special someone and realizing their importance in your life.
