The central premise of this book by Bronson (What Should I Do with My Life?) and Merryman, a Washington Post journalist, is that many of modern society's most popular strategies for raising children are in fact backfiring because key points in the science of child development and behavior have been overlooked. Two errant assumptions are responsible for current distorted child-rearing habits, dysfunctional school programs and wrongheaded social policies: first, things work in children the same way they work in adults and, second, positive traits necessarily oppose and ward off negative behavior. These myths, and others, are addressed in 10 provocative chapters that cover such issues as the inverse power of praise (effort counts more than results); why insufficient sleep adversely affects kids' capacity to learn; why white parents don't talk about race; why kids lie; that evaluation methods for giftedness and accompanying programs don't work; why siblings really fight (to get closer). Grownups who trust in old-fashioned common-sense child-rearing—the definitely un-PC variety, with no negotiation or parent-child equality—will have less patience for this book than those who fear they lack innate parenting instincts. Reviewers were generally wowed by Bronson and Merryman's breezy synthesis of the latest parenting research. They often favorably contrasted NurtureShock with traditional parenting guides, which seem old-fashioned compared with the authors' cutting-edge approach. But at least one skeptic felt that NurtureShock was just more of the same; the New York Times Book Review noted that every generation has a "revolutionary" book of parental advice, and this one may only seem novel because of a new kind of packaging. Nevertheless, even Pamela Paul found parts of the book interesting, suggesting that there may indeed be something in NurtureShock for everyone.

Nurture Shock’s basic premise is to take traditional parenting techniques and ideas and turn them on their heads. For instance the first chapter, called The In Inverse Power of Praise, is about how over praising children can have the opposite effect of what the parent intended. The child’s performance may actually decrease. Each chapter cites studies and research the authors have uncovered to support their conclusions. Most of the authors’ assertions make total sense after they explain the research that’s been done on the subject in question, even though it contradicts conventional wisdom.
My favorite chapter, that I think every parent should read, is Why White Parents Don’t Talk About Race. I have long railed against the notion of color-blindness being a sincere or realistic perspective and this chapter helps explain why. When parents don’t talk about race, it leaves children confused and often thinking any mention of race must be bad because their parents never talk about it.
This book is more about how children’s brains work and doesn’t have that many specific techniques that a parent could just lift out of the book and put into practice. However, if a parent has a better understand of how her child’s brain works and what her thought processes are, then she will be better able to come up with ways of dealing with her child that works for her family.
I think this is definitely one book every parent should have in his/her arsenal.

Pediatrician's evaluation of Nuture Shock

I am a pediatrician and a blogger. The following is a book review I co-wrote for my blog, [...], in April 2014.
While not exactly a traditional parenting book, Nuture Shock is full of interesting and useful information that parents can use. It may even change some of your basic assumptions about children! Unlike previous books reviewed on my blog that featured discussions of subjects like discipline, sleep schedules, or nutrition for babies and toddlers, NutureShock is an intellectual, research based book about what makes children tick. This book is not for the parent looking for a solution to address a specific parenting issue but rather for those readers wishing to gain insight into how children learn, develop, and function. Written by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman, both journalists and writers by trade, this book is an overview of the latest developments in child psychology and development.
Nuture Shock is actually a compilation of essays written on various topics from sleep, racial attitudes, lying in childhood, and sibling relationships. The book is well written and accessible to most readers although at times may seem dense with examples and citations from many pieces of literature and research. Fortunately for the reader, there is minimal scientific jargon to decipher. The book is well written and we are impressed with the extensive list of sources and references used to write this book. The introduction and conclusion give an overall look at the layout of the book and the reader may choose to jump around from chapter to chapter without interrupting the narrative flow.
The “Shock” in the title comes from the many counter intuitive conclusions about children that recent research offer. For example, in a chapter entitled “The Inverse Power of Praise,” the authors conclude that praising children excessively may actually hinder their progress and development of key virtues like grit and determination. Research reveals that children who are told repeatedly, “You are so smart!” often shy away from more challenging problems in order to maintain their appearance of “smartness” and continue to please adults. So much for boosting self esteem at any cost, theory. The authors also conclude that even mild sleep deprivation in children can cause major cognitive impairment, that children lie much more often than their parents ever imagine, that free unstructured play is vital to a child’s healthy emotional development, and that an accurate prediction of intelligence in young children is really impossible, even if you have a PhD after your name.
Although not a parenting guide, this is an entertaining and insightful read on some of the newer research on child development and psychology. We do not recommend this for a busy parent looking for solutions to address a particular issue but would recommend this to someone interested in what recent science says on these topics. As the book title says, many of the findings are shocking and contrary to what adults would find intuitive. If you have a little extra time, be sure to pick up a copy of NurtureShock. We think you will enjoy it. We give it four out of five Doc Smo stars.

I recently had the pleasure of reading NurtureShock for a graduate course in early child development. While I am not a parent myself, I think parents (and professionals involved in teaching, healthcare, policy, etc.) should consider picking up this book. Bronson and Merryman touch upon a vast number of subjects that are often of concern to anyone dealing with children. While the subjects range from the way praise should be delivered to how children develop language differently, the scientific research is extensive on nearly every topic discussed within the book. Each chapter dives into a different topic, but again - these topics are ALL of interest to anyone dealing with kids. The language used in the book can appeal to researchers in the field of child development/psychology or to moms who just want to know more about what's going on in their child's brain.
Being a graduate student, I've had numerous developmental theories pounded into my head that I will not soon forget. Many of the theories that have been floating around in my brain since freshman year Psych100 have become foundations for things I am still learning as a first year graduate student. The research findings and discussions presented in this book not only align with relevant theories, but also help to combat myths of old theories that are no longer being automatically accepted as truths. It should be noted that NurtureShock isn't telling parents that everything they're doing is wrong, but instead highlighting some really common misconceptions while providing the science and fact behind their arguments.
I would recommend this book to professors and students involved in child development, teachers of numerous ages, parents, or anyone looking to learn a little more about the small, mysterious creatures we call human children.
