Valuable contribution

I read this book prior to reading the Collected Works. Analytical psychology is what Jung named his psychology - including the archetypes & the collective unconscious. This isn't a bad way to start reading Jung himself (other than reading "Man & His Symbols" which has contributions by Jung & many of his foremost disciples). He makes a wide range of amazing statements in this book--some of which are counter-intuitive to many people. As usual he provides lots of food for thought. He takes a scientific viewpoint in almost all his writings, but he is not particularly well organized. But he is open minded and realistic: p. 143: "The world is huge and there is not one theory only to explain everything." This reflects his psychological theories/context: p. 66: "only childish people imagine that the world is what we think it is. The image of the world is a projection of the world of the self, as the latter is the introjection of the world."
In this book he makes some observations about marriage: p. 86: "If you study the ordinary psychology of marriage, you discover that most of the troubles consist in this cunning invention of irritating topics which have absolutely no foundation," p. 143: "Certain people make history and others build a house in the suburbs," & p. 149: "The parents make the neuroses of children."
He also comments pointedly on conscious understanding as related to the unconscious. For example: p. 123 "dreams are always about a particular problem of the individual about which he has a wrong conscious judgment" & p. 172: "Fanaticism is always a sign of repressed doubt...When one is really convinced one is perfectly calm and can discuss one's belief as a personal point of view without any particular resentment." However, Jung's observations & analyses are not for everyone: p. 147: "Those who are meant to hear will understand, and those who are not meant to understand will not hear." Here's to understanding!
