Being Supportive Also Matters
By Book Gannet
I was so looking forward to reading this book, a fun, saucy contemporary was just what I was looking for. Actually, sadly, I found it a little disappointing. Mostly I didn’t find it particularly funny. Yeah, I suppose there is some humor to be found in the awkward opening fumbles between Brynn and Eli, but mostly I cringed in sympathy then spent the rest of the book annoyed with Brynn.

Seriously, what is Brynn’s problem? For an independent business woman and an awesome mom of three, her reaction to Eli’s insecurities was depressingly conventional. The man must be strong and confident at all times so that she – the wilting feminine flower – can lean on him as necessary. After Eli was hugely supportive of her calling things off twice, she dumps him when he does it once because she doesn’t have time to deal with his issues. Also, considering how mean she is to Eli (the nicest guy in the history of nice guys), she’s pathetically indecisive and feeble when it comes to dealing with the other men in her life. Surely, if she can kick the Eli-puppy when he’s clearly down, she can get rid of a couple of sex-obsessed douche bags?

Then again, it’s kind of hard to know just what Brynn is looking for throughout this book. She wants sex – she has her chance with three guys, she talks about it enough, then says that isn’t what she wants. Okay. So she tells her mother she wants a family again, someone to help her with her kids, yet when Eli hints at forever she runs a mile because she isn’t ready. Except that’s what she tells everyone she wants!

These things really annoyed me because there was so much about Brynn I wanted to like. She’s a great mom, her business is brilliant and I had so much raging sympathy for her when her own mother kept lecturing her, but because of the way she treats Eli and her general indecisiveness I just couldn’t like her. If these things were caused by memories of her husband, fine, but they’re not. In fact after the first chapter or so, her husband barely gets a look in. Brynn’s irritating qualities are just Brynn, and her inability to even talk to Eli about his insecurities without being nasty pushed her firmly out of any likable category for me.

Because Eli is adorable. He’s a great dad, he’s sexy, his ex is evil and he’s so sweet in the way that he supports Brynn – which she clearly doesn’t deserve. Yeah, okay, he does go a little over-the-top alpha towards the end, but he has his reasons and if he and Brynn had been able to talk it out maybe she would have paid more attention. If they’d talked about his issues earlier then there wouldn’t even have been a book, because he’s clearly perfect for Brynn. Even she knows that. He and their collective children were the saving graces for me. They’re all great, with plenty of their own flaws, but they’re forgivable ones and just made them better characters. I wish Brynn had either seen it sooner, or her physical relationship with Eli had started much later on in the book.

Overall, this one just didn’t quite deliver on its promise. It did leave me curious about the rest of the series, though. Especially where co-worker Penny is concerned.

B- rating...

My Review:
This is one of those books. I honestly tried to DNF it several times because I simply did not like the heroine. A lot of the time she's shallow, a bit bi-polar, and sometimes a truly awful person. But the story was one of those that sucked me in. I'd put it down and then would pick it back up again.

The writing wasn't bad...again, my issues were with a single character. Bryn is conflicted. It's been 2 years since her husband died. She's lonely and wants to find love again. She thought Eli was the solution because they mesh together really well, but then a series of false-starts makes her double think that and she decides it's time for her to really start dating. Overall, I could understand that and her thinking, but it hit a point there where her wishy-washy actions just got to be too much...and then I just felt bad for all the guys she's stringing along...and her parents who get mixed up in all the craziness too. At times, she's just too over the top with her reactions.

But I loved Eli's character. Seriously, talk about a hero you can fall in love with, especially with the fact that he really wanted to be with Bryn. He's a stand-up guy and willing to do what it takes to make a relationship work. Add in the fact that he's a protective, alpha cop and I really did love him.

I also liked the set up of the sex toy shop, although the thing with the dildo models (I'm guessing this was a previous story line in another book) was a little bit creepy. Seriously, how would they have even gone about doing that whole process? It just seems wrong...and the fact that the kids were coming in and out of the shop was so, so, so much more wrong. But I did like the whole set up of the lingerie show and party at the club, especially that they were aiming the party at women and gay men.

So, this one was a hit or miss for me. I didn't like the heroine. I loved the hero. The overall storyline was good, but a few things about the execution bothered me. I think that others could like it more than I did. My issue was with a single character and just like with real life, not every person gets along with every other person, so it's very likely that you won't have the same issues with Bryn.

3 Stars

3 "Awkwardly Blushing" Stars

I read a lot. I've felt a myriad of emotions while reading. I've never felt the embarrassment of a character so thoroughly that my cheeks were literally hot to the touch because I was blushing and cringing and giggling so much all at once. The first half of this book was chock full of awkward moments but also a lot of endearing and silly ones too.

Size Matters follows Bryn as she is navigating life two years after the death of her husband. She has three kids and along with her best friend has opened an adult/lingerie shop. She finally feels ready to start dating. After spending a few months with Eli, Bryn is determined to have sex again. Once she makes this decision though, various things happen that keep the sexy times from occurring.

Through the first 50% of the book this was a solid 4 star read. Some of what Bryn and Eli went through was pretty silly but it was definitely entertaining and oh-so-real. The most blush inducing scene I've ever read was so realistic that I wanted to laugh and cringe at the same time. It was the opposite of the romantic sex scenes we usually see. For that I have to give Ms.Haefner props. I would recommend this book just for that part alone.

What brought it down to 3 stars for me was the entire book was Bryn not being able to make up her mind. Though I have to be honest and say I agreed with her take on Eli in the beginning. That guy needed to pull himself together. Eli was so sweet but needed a confidence boost stat. Eventually though it got so repetitive and childish that I just wanted her to decide already. Once Eli loosened his underpants, he was super sexy and not just super sweet. The ending was quick with some unnecessary (imo) drama added to the already detailed side plots, the book seemed to lose some of it's steam. That said the ending was very sweet and satisfying and I wish we could have seen more of the healthy and happy side of Eli and Bryn's relationship.
