Cognitive Enrichment Advantage Teacher Handbook

I am an educational therapist who works one-on-one with students who have learning disabilities. I have been using this book for over five years as a guide to mediated learning and when helping my students learn labels for cognitive functions. Greenberg's model of cogntive enrichment is based on Feuerstein's theory of mediated learning and is the most practical model that I have seen. My students love learning the labels included in the Building Blocks of Thinking and Tools of Learning. It helps them to apply thinking skills and/or the affective/motivational principles that they need to be effective in any learning experience. These labels transfer easily from a formal instructional setting to home, church, and/or recreational settings. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make a difference in the lives of children.

Nevertheless, Astrid is determined to succeed. While this graphic novel provides interesting information about the sport, at its heart it is a story of friendship, exploring the tensions which test the girls' relationship as they move from childhood to adolescence. Astrid learns to be honest with herself, her mother, and her friends through a series of stressful events. The graphic novelist employs several excellent visual devices: angles to denote action and effective placement and space within panels. Jamieson's clever use of imagery is noteworthy. For example, desert and prehistoric depictions are used to suggest exaggerated perceptions of elapsed time. Her clothes shopping "hell" sequence is spot-on. Panels with stick figures are employed for comments, notes, and explanations. A prologue effectively frames the story and the realistic style with full-color art is reminiscent of the work of Raina Telgemeier. While at times some panels are a bit text-dense, the story will engage readers who will identify with Astrid as she deals with frustrations and disappointments. It will especially appeal to those whose aspirations fly in the face of convention. About the Author
Victoria Jamieson received her BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. She worked as a children’s book designer before moving to Portland and becoming a freelance illustrator. She has also worked as a portrait artist aboard a cruise ship, and has lived in Australia, Italy, and Canada. She maintains a not-so-secret identity as Winnie the Pow, skater with the Rose City Rollers�roller derby league.

MUST-READ for Middle Grade Girls

I'm a 5th grade teacher and my students got in line to borrow this book from me! I recommended it to one of my students, a quiet girl who was often at odds with classmates and had trouble engaging in school. She returned it to me with a big grin on her face in just 48 hours. After that, it moved around from girl-to-girl until the boys heard about it and started borrowing it as well. It's an engaging story that speaks to this age group, especially girls. The main character is her own person trying to find her niche while dealing with friendship issues and self-doubt, practically the definition of a middle grader. It's funny and subtly teaches a valuable lesson about how to stick to something (including yourself - "To thine own self be true.") and not give up. Really great book!

ROLLER GIRL is a Power Jam for Victoria Jamieson

3 years ago, I fell hard in love with roller derby when my wife joined our local league and it changed her life. It changed mine also, and I've gotten untold amounts of enjoyment supporting this sport, but also seeing how essential it is to the women who participate in it. Victoria Jamieson has nailed the essential spirit of roller derby in ROLLER GIRL, by giving it the respect it deserves and presenting the sport for exactly what it is; hard, tough and rewarding.

Lead character Astrid's journey into derby is exactly what it needs to be; exciting, tough, and sometimes filled with hurt, both physical and emotional. Jamieson rides the line expertly in keeping the drama of the story compelling and engaging, but also not shying away from the reality of not always having a simple and clean resolution to all the problems. While this is an excellent young reader's book, it does not talk down to the audience, and lets the reader get all the info about Astrid's experience first hand, and then lets the reader see how she deals with it. This is always tough for an author to assume and trust their readers to not need to be hand held through a story, but Jamieson does it with good rewards for the reader who does follow along. She gets the reader up to speed with how roller derby works without bogging down the narrative, and throws in nice little Easter Eggs for experienced derby lovers to catch.

The art is also a good balance; whimsical as it needs to be, but also accurate enough to sell the real life aspects of derby. Jamieson does a good job of showing Astrid as someone who can cry and be frustrated without resorting to tropey "fragile female" shorthand, and also showing her being tough and feisty like a young tween would be. The "kid logic" works to great effect for letting Astrid grow and learn about herself and her friends in the story, again a wise and well-played storytelling win for Jamieson. My love of derby comes from seeing the athletes figuring themselves out in the sport and becoming stronger and more confident people, and ROLLER GIRL does that very, very well. It's crafted with love of the sport, but it also respects that roller derby is able to be very personally attuned to each and every woman that participates in it.

ROLLER GIRL hits all the right points about roller derby, like a blocker making a door for her jammer to fly through. A power jam of a graphic novel.
HIGHLY Recommended.

The dean of Star Wars fiction returns with this exploration of events between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Luke Skywalker has perhaps the easiest time, as his studying of the Jedi way is mentored and monitored by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Prince Leia is dedicated to the Rebellion but aware of the price this can exact and ambiguous about her feelings toward Han Solo, who is ambiguous about the Rebellion, even though he knows he is a marked man after his role in the destruction of the Death Star. And we meet Mara Jade as a young Hand to the Emperor Palpatine, still developing her abilities as a troubleshooter. In this case, the trouble can shoot back--a band of renegade stormtroopers, half-vigilante and half-pirate. Mara finds good men and women in the service of the Empire, but over all looms the shadow of Darth Vader, who has a short way with both failure and rivals. The author paints a rather large canvas in a comparatively compact book, with his usual spare prose, swift pacing, and eye and ear for details in the world he is depicting. More exploration of the in-between periods in the saga will be heartily welcomed. Roland Green

Easy on the eyes, and not just b/c its got Mara

As books go, I found Outbound Flight rather on the boring side, not so with Allegiance. This book, I finished in 2 days. The characters are a mite on the flat side, but Mara Jade pulls through fine. Everything ties together neatly in the end...perhaps too neatly but heck, that's most good fiction out there.

The dialogue's decent, the actions great, the plot twists are good. Overall, Zahn pulls off another lovely star wars novel.

BTW, the idea of including non-clone stormtroopers is only logical, this is a long time after the clone wars. Palpy wouldn't be spending credits on more clones when he can just invest in some nice propaganda and get lots of youngin's ready to defend the Empire.

About the Author
Romano Guardini (1885 1968) was ordained a priest in 1910. He was a professor at the University of Berlin until the Nazis expelled him in 1939. His sermons, books, popular classes, and his involvement in the post-war German Catholic Youth Movement won him worldwide acclaim. Reading this is just like following a medieval lectio divina

A very special book that allows for ample contemplation on the ways Jesus revealed himself and acted in the world. Fairly short chapters allow the reader to think on and understand different aspects of Christ. Guardini's insights are superb but not immediately overwhelming; he allows the reader to sink gently deeper and deeper into the mystery of God-made-man. Reading this is just like following a medieval lectio divina; one goes step by step deeper into contemplating a central mystery of the Christian faith. A real spiritual classic!

Everything I needed for the CTEL

This text admirably addresses the CTEL exam. Pop for the third edition; it's worth it. And if it were up to me, this book's sections on immigration law, history, and diversity would be required reading for any educator.

Buy the Book, Pass the CTEL

This book is a MUST! I didnt want to take any prep classes or go through college courses for my CLAD, so I opted to take the CTEL exam. All I did was read this book from cover to cover--THAT'S IT. Everything I needed to know was in this book! I passed all three sections in one day, first time. I didnt do any other prepping; no class, no online practice test--just read a chapter a night the two weeks before I took it. I picked this book based on other's reviews, and THEY WERE RIGHT! Do yourself a favor and get this book if you are taking the CTEL.
