About the Author
Darrell Max Craig is a highly regarded teacher of many of Japanese martial arts, and a pioneer in their development in the West for over forty years. He holds multiple black belts and is a U.S. Kendo champion, leading the U.S. Kendo team to the world championships. In 1973 he was awarded the title of Shihan, or Master Teacher. Among his many books on the subject is the widely praised The Heart of Kendo. He lives in Houston, Texas.

excellent book on mugairyu iaido,but i think photo,s would have helped with understanding the kata more easily,i do understand the reasoning for figure drawings!

Terrific Read!!!!!!

I began reading another book by this author "Japan's Ultimate Martial Art... Jujitsu Before 1882 The Classical Japanese Art of Self- Defense"; I enjoyed the book so much that I looked for another book written by this author(Darrell Max Craig). I found the book "Mugai Ryu...The Classical Japanese Art of Drawing the Sword" to be complete; in the sense that he really pulls you back into the time period of fuedal Japan when the sword was the weapon of the Japanese warrior. It brings a sense of reading a history novel, a fantasy (as in I was swept away within this book), but mostly real application of the sword. Everything was explained in his very down to earth way, which I so appreciated. This book was another great find and worth every cent. I would recommend this book to any one who is interested in the Japanese sword.

1st review not true, great book indeed!

I lived in Houston, Texas at one time. I was never a student of Mr. Craig's, but having in an interest in the martial arts, this is how I came to know about Darrell Craig's dojo and his books. He is well know and respected in not only the Houston martial arts and law enforcement communities, but he is well known (and quite credible) in the writing and television communities too. He is well know for his festival appearances and relationships in the Japanese community. I have enjoyed all of his previous books and this one is certainly the best.
What Mr. Craig writes in his books is apparently basically what he practices. No one disputes Mr. Craig's over thirty years of experience. He makes it very clear in this book about Mugai ryu that (while the reviewer from the Netherlands disingenuously does not), there are as many as five different claims and several different "soke's" to the one all true form of this type of Japanese swordmanship called Mugai ryu. So, apparently any claim to "authority on Mugai ryu" is an immediate contradiction.
Also, as far as I can tell, Mr. Craig does not claim that this is a history book, and I don't know anything about Japanese history to care enough about a several year mistake. Of course the movements are different in the book than the movements practiced by others worldwide, Mr. Craig did not learn and does not teach the movements of this particular reviewer from the Netherlands. I think the reviewer's one-star review was less of a review and more of a commercial.

I can't practice the beautiful and fascinating art of Iai, but at least I can read about it from Mr. Craig's book. He consistently provides fantastic glimpses into an art form that most westerners find absolutely mysterious. Six stars.

This is a FANTASTIC hands-on science experiments book for kids! Highly recommend!

Usborne Science Activities, Vol. 2 This is a FANTASTIC hands-on science experiments book for kids! Highly recommend! We have all three volumes in this set. My daughters love these experiments (Kindergarten and Third grade) and as another reviewer perfectly put it: "We have really enjoyed the hands-on aspect and the easy-to-understand format of these science lessons. Each book has three separate topics that are explored in depth with experiments and activities using common household items. The concepts taught are quite sophisticated considering the fun and easy format. Kids are taught real science principles that can be applied to real life situations, but it is done in a way that is non-threatening and keeps their interest. A few of the experiments didn't work as planned but for the most part they came out fine."

We are using this book as part of our Sonlight Science home school curriculum, but I think anyone would love to do these experiments with their kids any time. :-) They are not only easy to do... but they also explain what / why the experiments work, which is nice. :-) Again, highly recommend any of the three books in this series!

Some lessons seem like they could use more background information. But there are some good, helpful ideas as to share science with young children. It just seems to be lacking usable information is some places. Definitely don't buy this as a standalone science piece, but maybe just summertime fun science or something like that.

In 1970, while sifting through war documents in Vietnam, Fred Whitehurst, an American lawyer serving with a military intelligence dispatch, found a diary no bigger than a pack of cigarettes, its pages handsewn together. Written between 1968 and '70 by Tram, a young, passionate doctor who served on the front lines, it chronicled the strife she witnessed until the day she was shot by American soldiers earlier that year at age 27. Whitehurst, who was greatly moved by the diary and smuggled it out of the country, returned it to Thuy's family in 2005; soon after, it was published as a book in Vietnam, selling nearly half a million copies within a year and a half. The diary is valuable for the perspective it offers on war—Thuy is not obsessed with military maneuvers but rather the damage, both physical and emotional, that the war is inflicting on her country. Thuy also speaks poignantly about her patients and the compassion she feels for them. Unfortunately, the writing, composed largely of breathless questions and exclamations, is monotonous at times, somewhat diminishing the book's power. (Sept.)

"Idealistic young North Vietnamese doctor describes her labors in makeshift clinics and hidden hospitals during the escalation of the Vietnam War.
Tram did not survive the war. On June 22, 1970, an American soldier shot her in the head while she was walking down a jungle pathway dressed in the conventional black pajamas of her compatriots. Judging by her diary, rescued from the flames by another American soldier and first published in Vietnam in 2005, she died with a firm commitment to the Communist Party, the reunion of Vietnam, her profession and her patients, many of whom she saved in surgeries conducted under the most primitive and dangerous conditions imaginable. In one of her first entries, on April 12, 1968, she characterizes herself as having 'the heart of a lonely girl filled with unanswered hopes and dreams.' This longing and yearning—especially for the lover she rarely sees, a man she names only as 'M' — fills these pages and gives them a poignancy that is at times almost unbearable. Early on, Tram records her concerns about being accepted into the Party. She eventually—and gleefully—is, but one of her last entries reveals the results of an evaluation by her political mentors, who say she must battle her 'bourgeois' tendencies. It’s a laughable adjective to apply to a young woman dedicating her life to the communists’ political and military cause. Tram blasts the despised Americans over and over, calling them 'imperialist,' 'invaders,' 'bloodthirsty.' She notes with outrage the devastation wrought by bombs, artillery and defoliation. Describing her efforts to treat a young man burned by a phosphorous bomb, she writes, 'He looks as if he has been roasted in an oven.'

About the Author
DANG THUY TRAM was a Vietnamese doctor who volunteered at the age of twenty-four to work in a Vietcong battlefield hospital in the Quan Ngai province. In the two years she worked in the hospital before her death in 1970, she recorded all she saw and felt in the pages of her diary.

FRANCES FITZGERALD covered the Vietnam War for The New Yorker. Her resulting book, Fire in the Lake, received the Pulitzer Prize.

ANDREW X. PHAM is the author of the award-winning memoir Catfish and Mandala and The Eaves of Heaven.

Excellent book for those interested in VN war history

The writing style is sometimes hard to follow and the author was obviously not trying to make an accurate day by day account of the war. It was more a personal project of hers, just to record her thoughts and feelings. I found it very touching and enlightening, to be able to have the thoughts of one from the "other side". It really humanizes the people who suffered in the war, those in Vietnam who were caught in a situation they could not escape.

Having traveled in Vietnam recently, with ordinary people from all walks of life there, some who fought for the Hanoi government, you begin to realize what a tragedy the entire conflict was. Not only for the 54,000 Americans killed, but for the soldiers from both sides, all 3 sides really, in Vietnam who just wanted a peaceful and normal life.

A lack of cultural understanding, and fear of a people we had no reason to fear was the root cause of the conflict. Books such as this will help bridge that gap, and bring about a more peaceful and tolerant world. Dang Thuy Tram, in my mind, did not die in vain. We owe it to her to read her thoughts..

Chapter One: Death of An Icon

Christmas Day, 2016, and the nation was settling down to digest its turkey, roast potatoes and Brussels sprouts when the news started to come through. One of the most famous stars of his generation had passed away. Aged just fifty-three, George Michael, golden boy of the 1980s and international superstar for the whole of his adult life, had been found dead in bed at his home in Goringon-Thames,Oxfordshire, yet another high-profile death in what had been an extraordinary year.
Ever since the singer David Bowie had died at the beginning of 2016, a roll call of the musical greats had seemed to pass away: Prince, Leonard Cohen, Earth, Wind & Fire founder Maurice White, Beatles producer George Martin, Keith Emerson, Merle Haggard – the list seemed to go on and on. Many more famous figures from other walks of life, including the writer Harper Lee, the actor
Alan Rickman, the Egyptian politician Boutros Boutros-Ghali and numerous others had gone, too, which, allied to a series of earth-shattering world events in the political sphere – Brexit, the election of Donald Trump, ructions in the Eurozone and the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East – had seemed to be changing the very nature of the planet. And now, adding to the roll call of the Grim Reaper’s subjects in this extraordinary year, there was George Michael, too.
There seemed to be something particularly tragic about George’s death, however, a man who, like Prince, had gone decades before his time. A generation had grown up with music from his Wham! days as a backdrop to their lives and had watched, with a good deal of sympathy albeit laced with bewilderment, as he battled his demons in later years, with addictions to drink and drugs leading to all manner of public escapades in which a worse-for-wear George would find himself in the headlines yet again. All this was actually explained by the battle that the public was not privy to in the early days: the struggle George had with his homosexuality, his reluctance to go public about it for fear of upsetting his Greek Cypriot parents and, when he first hit the limelight, his fans.
George had found fame as a teen idol appealing to young girls and the record industry was none too keen on the idea of its latest heart-throb making it clear to his female fans that his interests lay very much elsewhere and so it took the singer-songwriter years before he was eventually able to come out of the closet, which he did only when in reality he had no other choice after his arrest in 1998 for ‘engaging in a lewd act’ – although in fairness, in later years he claimed this was a ‘subconsciously deliberate act’. It certainly put an end to years of speculation about the true nature of his sexuality. But as with so many of his travails, this too was greeted very sympathetically by a public who had come to understand that George Michael was a deeply troubled man. Although prone to complain about the excessive media coverage that resulted in such scrutiny of his life, he was at the same time a much-loved figure and there was a palpable desire for George to defeat his demons once and for all.
Alas, it was never going to happen and soon the sad news of his demise had been verified. ‘It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas
period,’ his publicist Connie Filippello said in a statement. ‘The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.’ Of course, there was a great deal of
speculation as to what actually happened: George’s heavy drug use was no secret and it was also widely known that he had spent periods in rehab, none of which had ever managed to make much of a difference to his life. Many feared the worst, but it eventually emerged that the cause of death had been heart failure: he died ‘in bed, lying peacefully,’ his manager Michael Lippman said. ‘I’m devastated,’ he added, but there was ‘no foul play whatsoever.’ Even so, George’s lifestyle, specifically his drug intake, must have taken its toll and it is the case that cardiac arrest is frequently suffered by heroin users. There were persistent rumours that this had become George’s drug of choice although members of his family strongly denied it. There was no doubt, however, that he had spent long periods in rehab and had indulged mightily in narcotics over the years.
The police had been called to the property as is standard in these matters and released a statement just before midnight on the 25th: ‘Thames Valley Police were called to a property in Goring-on-Thames shortly before 2 p.m. Christmas Day. Sadly, a 53-year-old man was confirmed deceased at the scene. At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious’. An ambulance also arrived at around 1.40pm and the reality began to sink in for those on the scene: George Michael really had gone.
Of course George had had health problems for years, one of the most serious being a bout of pneumonia in 2011, during which he’d needed a tracheotomy and which had left him with permanent lung damage, serious for a man who had previously confessed to smoking twenty-five cannabis joints a day. There was some speculation that there might have been some form of recurrence, this time a fatal one. ‘His lungs never fully recovered,’ one source explained. ‘That can happen after a serious bout of pneumonia like George had. Sometimes, it leaves the lung scarred or damaged, which can lead to a loss of function. It can leave you feeling breathless, as the lungs have a smaller capacity than before. George made no secret about how much he smoked. Smoking can seriously affect the lungs
and dramatically increases the risk of infection. After having pneumonia, it’s incredibly dangerous to smoke at all.’ George had in fact previously given up smoking but some reports were suggesting that he had taken up the habit again.
As more details began to filter through about what had really happened, it emerged that it was George’s boyfriend, the celebrity hairstylist Fadi Fawaz, who had found the singer. Fadi was clearly in a state of shock. ‘ITs a xmas i
will never forget finding your partner dead peacefully in bed first thing in the morning. I will never stop missing you xx,’ he tweeted. George’s ex-partner, with whom he had been for many years (and many thought a reunion was on the cards), Kenny Goss, also issued a statement: ‘He was a major part of my life and I loved him very, very much. Equally poignant was a posting from George’s Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley, with whom he’d found fame all those many years ago. ‘Heartbroken at the loss of my beloved friend Yog [George’s nickname]. A xx.’ Indeed, the two of them had shared a particularly special bond – no one else could have known quite what it was like for those two young boys still barely out of their teens to be catapulted into the spotlight and onto the stage of international stardom. NHS nurses who attended a free concert that Michael held for them in 2006 were keen that the world should know of his generosity. ‘No one had ever done anything like that before, and no one has done it since,’ Caroline Smith, thirty-seven, a senior nurse at Royal Surrey County Hospital, told The Times. ‘It was such a powerful evening. For somebody as famous as that, to thank us in such a way, was really quite inspirational. I should hope at the very least he’s in everybody’s thoughts.’
Fellow nurse Simon Pawlin added: ‘It set him apart. We left that concert buzzing. The fact that it wasn’t for the cameras, it wasn’t about him being a celebrity, it was about him giving something back, that tells you something
about the person he was. It was a very special evening we’ll never forget.’
It further emerged that George donated the royalties from ‘Jesus To A Child’ to children’s charity Childline, a gift that amounted to �2 million, on condition that it be kept secret. ‘George helped us to reach out to hundreds of thousands
of children through his generosity,’ said Childline founder Esther Rantzen, who was among those calling for a tribute concert in his honour and who believed his personal issues might have contributed to a special sympathy for the children that needed Childline.
‘He approached us, rather than us going cap in hand to him, but it was an intensely personal gift. He didn’t want it to be known or to be part of his image. I think it would be wonderful to celebrate him with a tribute concert next year. We were able to counsel 300,000 children who needed help last year, through emails, online and phone calls, and George made a palpable difference. There was a sense of personal interest. He kept his sexuality quiet and it may
have been tough for him when he was younger.’
By this time, George’s death was making headlines worldwide. Fans and admirers began leaving floral tributes outside his home overlooking the River Thames, which still had a berry- and apple-covered wreath on one side door and
two reindeer statues in the garden covered with fairy lights, while an outpouring of affection and sorrow was engulfing everyone involved with his private life. ‘The family and close friends of George have been touched beyond words by the incredible outpouring of love for him in the hours and days
since his death,’ his publicist said in a further statement, which was also keen to emphasise that the death was not drugs-related. ‘For someone whose life was ultimately about his music and the love he had for his family and friends, his
fans and the world at large, there could be no more fitting tribute than the many, many, kind words that have been said...
