About the Author

Mary Renck Jalongo is a professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she earned the university-wide outstanding professor award and coordinates the Doctoral Program in Curriculum and Instruction. She is co-editor of Springer's Educating the Young Child book series and has written, co-authored, or edited more than 25 books, including Early Childhood Language Arts (6th ed.) and Creative Thinking and Arts-Based Learning (5th ed.) with Pearson, and Major Trends and Issues in Early Childhood Education: Challenges, Controversies, and Insights (2nd ed.). In addition, she has written two books for the NAEYC (Learning to Listen, Listening to Learn; Young Children and Picture Books), edited two for ACEI, and earned various national awards for writing. Since 1995, Dr. Jalongo has served as editor-in-chief of the Early Childhood Education Journal.

Joan Packer Isenberg is Professor of Education at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, where she has twice received the distinguished faculty award for teaching excellence and also served as an Associate Dean. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in early childhood education from Wheelock College and her doctorate in elementary education from Rutgers University. She has taught preschool-, primary-, and elementary-age children and held administrative postions in both public and private school settings. As a writer, Dr. Isenberg has authored or co-authored 15 book and more than 50 journal articles. She has been a Visiting Scholar for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), where she led higher education initiatives and the reform of advanced master's degrees for practicing teachers, and has served on the NCATE Board of Examiners, as President and in other elected offices of the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE), and in offices of the Metro Area Branch of the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI). Her research interests� are in teachers' professional development, arts integration, and early childhood curriculum. She was the 2006 NAECTE recipient of the Pearson/Allyn and Bacon Outstanding Early Childhood Teacher Educator Award.

I gave this only 3 stars because the textbook I got had water damage so some of the pages were stuck together, but after I pulled them apart it was still readable. Otherwise just some wear and tear.

A Unique Perspective, Great Read!

My initial impression of the title was that the book would be about some way of reaching the singularity through socialism which actually kind of turned me off at first, but at the same time it was the first hook for me, the second hook for me was that it was really about the convergence of the correct parts of all economic ideologies and how as we race toward the singularity a convergence was starting to happen. I found this idea intriguing because up until that point I thought progress entailed a full abandonment of all of the old ideologies in order to transcend to the new. I hadn't really thought of it in terms of convergence.
During the first few pages I was a little worried I wouldn't understand it. The language used is sophisticated and academically styled but completely without the typical dryness and pedantry. As I read on my worries quickly faded because the book provided enough background for me to easily put the ideas he was presenting together. The book did lead me to do a ton of research throughout, but it wasn't for lack of understanding. It was because I was fascinated by all of the ideas that I read about. It sparked a lot of curiosity in me to search out more. I read this book a lot differently than others which yielded a completely different experience for me than I had with any other book that I’ve read. The book was so engaging that almost every time I sat down to read it, I’d be astonished to realize that hours and hours had passed and then I’d find myself awake at night preoccupied with the book!
It gave me an incredible amount of insight as to the origins of my own world views but it also forced me reexamine my notions of ‘opposing’ ideologies and that instead, they should be looked at as a body of knowledge and discoveries acquired through man’s struggle to reconcile his collective and individual nature. The so called polarized opposites of collectivism and individualism are the necessary parts of the same self -organizing, complex evolutionary process by which human societal and cultural evolution advances leading to a both-and, and not an-either or, dialectical synthesis.
The book’s content is very well written, meticulously researched and demonstrates an intellectually honesty that is sorely lacking in so many works today. C. James puts the pieces together using an extensive collection of excerpts and quotes from the most influential economists, philosophers, futurists, visionaries and writers of the past, present and from all along the ideological spectrum. Regardless of your world view, or whatever your political background is, you will find the ideas in this book both engaging and provocative. It’s a mind-blowing paradigm changer and a bright outlook minus the stereotypical hype.

One of the most important socio-economic books I have read.

This book brings so much together to explain how economics and politicized economics have been organized for good and ill today. But it goes so much further to explain in straightforward language how complex dynamic systems really operate and why and how relatively free markets raise the wealth of the world and everyone in it over time.

This is a very techno-optimistic book positing an historical point in our future via technology and relatively free markets where all the needs and many of the desires of everyone on earth can be met with a trivial fraction of productive capacity regardless of whether one has what today we think of as a 'job'. It is a book about a wide open future, what it takes to get there in economic policy and technology, and some of the mistaken economic ideas that stand in its way.

I think the book does a tremendous service and clarifies much of the old ideological wars between right and left, libertarians and socialists. It is a book of great hope.

What I think would make it even better or should be in a follow up book is more about how to get there from here - how to keep the wheels on the bus of technological and economic progress while removing the roadblocks and while ensuring believable tangible benefit to all. In particular I think a large section on IP and its misuse to slow progress and protect existing power centers is sorely needed. A section on how and when we get beyond the chimera of full employment being required for a healthy society is also needed - something much beyond current welfare state models.

A fascinating book:

THE SINGULARITY & SOCIALISM evokes curiosity and imagination. Who were these notable (or notorious) philosophers? Which of them had been misled by their predecessors, and what have been the consequences? Suppose Karl Marx had better promoted his later and wiser thinking. Who has exploited Marx's earlier ideas, choosing to ignore the latter?

Author C. J. Townsend conveys numerous such thoughts, tempting us to become more familiar with philosophers from ancient to modern times, and to extrapolate from the visionary optimism of contemporary thinkers such as Raymond Kurzweil.

Predicting societal evolution is fun by rarely accurate. But, motivated to dream, I prefer the sweet dreams of abundance, harmony and prosperity with which author Townsend teases us.

Inspired by the author, but without a strict recipe, we are free to envision this better future. For example, imagine that private enterprise has freed itself from government obstacles to develop hydrogen fusion power. What a boon for humanity, and for “mother earth”!

If you lack curiosity and imagination, don't read this book: just continue swallowing the popular propaganda which maintains the status quo at our expense. However, if you hope for a better future, this book will energize your thinking.

The Gold Standard on American Realism Painting

Edward Lucie-Smith's inimitable style of writing endears him to his readers who might just be buying art books for the pictures - the ubiquitous coffeetable book. His approach to his subject (and his catalogue of published books on art is staggering in scope) is always 'Art first, Opinion second', which is another way of saying that he lets the work describe itself in the sensitive way in which he constructs his books.
AMERICAN REALISM is as much a sociological study of the American progress as it is a matrix to etch images that accompany that historical trek. In his fine introduction he sets the tone for the journey, then addresses early American art and begins his intensive presentation with the works of Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer. Subsequent chapters find new insights into American Still Life, the Impressists in America (Cassatt, Sargent, Chase, Hassam), then proceeds on through the Ashcan School, Regionalism (one of the most creative chapters), through the Urban and Social Realism of the likes of Hopper, Marsh, Soyer and Shahn. Here his style of writing diverges as he addresses the Revolution in American Art, or, what has America made that is uniquely her own. Of great interest here is his emphasis on painters such as Paul Cadmus, Philip Guston, Jared French, George Tooker, Andrew Wyeth, bringing to their works a sensitivity rarely written prior to this book. After Abstraction he once again returns to representational art and brings to life Fairfield Porter, Neil Welliver, Jane Freilicher, Larry Rivers, Richard Diebenkorn,Wayne Thiebaud, Chuck Close, John Nava, Alice Neel, Gregory Gillespie, Martha Mayer Erlebacher, Eric Fischl, Leon Golub, and yes, even Jeff Koons.
The sparkling and informative dialogue of this book is enhanced by superb reproductions of paintings in both color and black and white. This book is somewhat dated now, having been published in 1994 and newly released in paperback. One hopes that Lucie-Smith will write a sequel to this volume and bring the public up to date with the many artists who belong in this company, artists - like Wes Hempel, Gerard Huber, Michael Workman, Wade Reynolds, James Doolin, Willaim Fogg, Robert Peterson, Daniel Sprick..........and of course countless others. A 'must have' for any solid library.

A much broader topic than one would have suspected

One of the myths of "realism" is that it is somehow less challenging than non-representational art. This terrific book takes on the broad sweep of American Realism from the Civil War through 1990. The book is full of wonderful images from so many different styles that the reader can begin to see that what is called realistic or representational has its own symbolic language and is full of its own abstractions and distortions of trying to represent aspects of our four dimensional world on a two dimensional surface.

The book is full of paintings of all types and styles within this broad topic. There are also photographs of related sculpture and even photographs that are themselves the work of art. The images contained in the book range from the sublime, to the odd and strange, through the raunchy and vulgar.

The text is lively, insightful, and adds a great deal to the reader's understanding of the images included.

Satisfying physical, emotional, and spiritual hunger

To give my authentic reaction to _8 Keys to Recovery from an Eating Disorder_, I'll share an excerpt from the e-mail I wrote to the author soon after I completed the book:
"I absolutely loved this book!!! Similar to my experience with your other book, I enthusiastically savored every nourishing word! I just love how the book explains, organizes, demystifies, and humanizes eating disorder treatment and recovery. This book has already informed and shaped the therapy sessions I have held since reading it. (I feel like I've been channeling it in all my recent sessions!)"

For therapists, those who suffer from eating disorders, and their loved ones, this book offers a complete and satisfying menu. It's divided into eight "main courses" which are the keys to eating disorder recovery:
Key 1: Motivation, Patience, and Hope
Key 2: Your Healthy Self Will Heal Your Eating Disorder Self
Key 3: It's Not About the Food
Key 4: Feel Your Feelings, Challenge Your Thoughts

The book is also packed with practical tools and techniques for managing eating disorder behaviors, including conscious eating guidelines, the hunger scale, and ways to move through the three-step process of feeling, challenging, and changing. Supplementing these how-to's is the spiritual component of the book which recognizes the complexity and depth of eating disorders. In the authors' own words (p. 222):
"With an eating disorder, you fall into the illusion that your worth is tied to the external, to things of the ego such as your looks and your ability to control food or your body. [The goal of recovery] is to tie your worth to your innate intrinsic value as a human being, and your connection to other beings and the world around you. This involves turning your attention to matters of spirituality and soul."

And, to help guide the readers through this essential spiritual growth aspect of the recovery process, the book explores the four-fold path of: (1) showing up; (2) paying attention; (3) telling the truth without judgment; and (4) not being too attached to the results. Following this path, it becomes possible to use mindfulness to respond from the soul instead of react from the ego, and to ultimately experience "the love, self-worth, and connection you were seeking all along." (p. 190)

The book ends with a clear and inspirational snapshot of recovery (p. 253) :
You will no longer have an eating disorder self but instead be living your life as a fully whole integrated person.
You will understand your issues but no longer use eating disorder behaviors to cope.
You will feel your feelings and know how to challenge your thoughts.
You will eat freely--but consciously--what you want, and no longer use scales or diets to dictate your eating.
You will continue to be aware of and work on any problematic behaviors that need to change.
You will get your needs met from your relationships rather than your eating disorder.
You will live a soul-led life that brings you meaning and purpose.

As a therapist, I highly, highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with an eating disorder, and for all of those who support them during the recovery process. The content of the book feeds the mind and provides guidelines to follow for feeding the soul. In the end, it's possible for anyone to arrive at the destination of one of the clients featured in the book who pledges that (p. 256):
"I will let food satisfy my physical hunger and love fulfill my emotional hunger."

An ABSOLUTE must for therapists and clients alike!

As both a therapist, and in recovery myself, I found this book to be extremely informative and inclusive. I have read countless books on the subject, and found that "8 Keys to Recovery from an Eating Disorder" effortlessly weaves together the many therapies and directions one could take to better understand, and eventually heal, from an eating disorder.

The unusual format, in which we hear client and therapist perspectives both between Grabb and Costin, and within each author (having each been "on both sides of the couch"), is an effective antidote to shame, and provides hope for full recovery.

The writing assignments interspersed throughout the book may feel overwhelming at first, but bring a much-needed awareness to thoughts and behaviors that often go unchallenged. From personal experience, I know how pervasive and insidious the inner critic (aka The Eating Disorder Self, or Ed) is, and how it can stick around far longer than the behaviors themselves. If you have been working at recovery for a while (like myself) the questions will likely look familiar. But what's different from other books, is how the exercises build on themselves. And the authors' honest disclosures help to normalize some of the thoughts and behaviors that often keep us locked in shame.

I was also impressed by the inclusion of progressive practices, such as mindfulness and self-compassion, which are rapidly receiving the respect and attention that they deserve.

For therapists: This book is a comprehensive resource for supporting your clients.
For clients: This book offers support for wherever you are in your recovery. And even though it is written by two therapists, it is very approachable, as Grabb and Costin have a wonderful way of explaining concepts, often relying on personal experience to provide examples.

Hope and Understanding

It is probably true to say that we all know someone with an eating disorder and we may ourselves have struggled with eating too much or too little. I personally have in the past self-medicated with food but didn't realize I was doing this due to a period of depression in my life. Society also puts a lot of pressure on us to eat (don't you want another helping?) or not to eat (that will make you fat). So it is very likely that anyone reading this book will easily relate to the issues presented. Mainly this book gives hope that you can overcome an eating disorder. This may however not be a short-term project and may require real lifestyle changes. You may really have to fight to get better. That is where this books comes in and guides you gently to recovery. There is an excellent section on how you can strengthen your healthy self with self-talk. Healing may come from confronting your thoughts. This book will help you change your behaviors so you can get healthy again. This book even deals with compulsive exercise. Basically the authors help you deal compassionately with yourself and this leads to positive change.
