Good book, pity about the publishers

Yes I know the publisher points out that this is an important historical book and that there may be pages missing, type errors etc but they really needed to have done better.

For example, you have pages here that are just off centre. Now what exactly does that have to do with the original copy? The width of the page is the same so why not just reproduce it with the pages on centre instead of this sloppy print where you have to almost bend the book backwards to read the opposite page.

Another example, the text. Now I don't especially mind if some maps are missing or even some text may be missing so long as this is pointed out and every effort has been made by the publishers to find from other editions corresponding text. This book however looks like someone went down to their local library, found the original book, made a photocopy on the libraries machine and then bound it up and made 500 copies for sale! To say this is a very sloppy book is an understatement.

Anyway on with the book. Most will know that Lea Africanus provided the west with one of its most comprehensive descriptions of Africa mostly based upon sources he had access to in the Arabic speaking world. His knowledge of the interior of the Sahara for example (something the west was ignorant of until the 19th century) for example would have been remarkable the same goes for his descriptions of east Africa and the various Muslim kingdoms there (Even though the Portuguese would have been in contact with these places by this time even their knowledge would have been limited)

I suppose with the many books now on Africa from the 14th to 17th century being translated this book doesn't really provide us with much new but it should still stand along such historical figures as ibn Batutta and Marco Polo as a book of great historical significance.

The conventional wisdom about historical memory is summed up in George Santayana’s celebrated phrase, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Today, the consensus that it is moral to remember, immoral to forget, is nearly absolute. And yet is this right?

Memory is not always desirable

Slow, ponderous read, but worth the effort. Reiff's arguments are deliberate, thoughtful, and cautious. He often makes a considerable effort to make an argument and just as he has convinced you of his premise, he puts forth an antithesis to that very premise and makes a counter argument. This is one reason I enjoy his works, as difficult as they are, because at the end of the day he likes you to make your own judgment. In this, I imagine Reiff sitting on his mom's lap as a child being taught how to think and argue. Lucky mom, lucky son.

Memory, History and Their Entanglement

David Rieff has written a thoughtful and provocative book which I enjoyed and have recommended to others. A few caveats or, perhaps more fairly, cavils: Rieff's syntax frequently reminds one of Proust's or Henry James's meandering sentences which one has to read several times to locate the subject, operative verb and general sense intended. Further there is a good deal of intellectual preening in this slender volume, with enough snippets of quotes to pass as a mini-Bartlett's Quotations. I also was for a while confused by his using alternative phrases to express what I assume to be the same core theme: "historical memory," "collective memory," and "collective historical memory," although I suspect there are semantic shadings here which I missed.

Not a Keeper

I have found the two earlier editions on my shelf to be absolutely invaluable ~ they are disintegrating from heavy use. But, I'm afraid that the old ones will wear even more, because the hair line print, both the text and the drawings in this edition (undoubtedly the best edition yet for content) is a chore. I don't know what they were thinking ~ going green by saving ink? I'm going to try to adapt to the pale gray but I'm not optimistic about succeeding. A return may ultimately be in order along with the purchase of a new copy of an older more legible edition. Two point five stars for now, but will re-comment if I find it to be keeper.

OK --- this is an addendum to above: The fifth edition is for me NOT a keeper - I've given it to a friend who has only rare need for this type of reference material, in contrast to my frequent need and use. I have normal eyesight, and the text in the fifth edition is both pale and diminutive to such an extent that I find it illegible in any practical sense. I'm very disappointed in that I was eagerly looking forward to this new edition. The drawings are usable, but taxing for the same reasons. What we have is Beethoven's Fifth delivered underwater. What a bummer! Two stars.

The content is excellent. The font used is absolutely horrendous and makes the book nearly unreadable

[[VIDEOID:moCGQ9YG4ZZ8ZM]]I have been looking for a book such as this for years. I was not aware of this book until it became available to me in the Amazon Vine program.

It's a very comprehensive book that covers all aspects of building construction. And by comprehensive, I mean exactly that. It covers everything from the building site to foundations, floor systems, wall systems, roof systems, moisture & thermal protection, doors & windows, finish work, mechanical & electrical systems and notes on materials.

If you've been curious about what it takes to plan and construct a building but you're not a contractor, this is a great overview. Perhaps you won't be fully equipped to build a garage or shed if you've never built one before or had any experience in construction. But at the very least this will get you up to speed with the lingo and concepts involved in construction. It will enable you to communicate more easily with an architect or contractor if you are having a house built. If nothing else, it is a wonderful way to learn more about building construction if you are not really into building construction.

The content in this book is excellent. It is illustrated very well.

What is not excellent is the font used throughout the book, I can barely read this. The font weight is very thin and the font face is horrendous, I don't think the publisher could have chosen a worse font if they had tried.

I very nearly rated this book 2 stars because of the difficulty I am having reading it. But the content is king so I've given it 4 stars. If legibility is top on your list, then you will definitely be disappointed in this book no matter how good the content is.

I recommend this book with reservations.

Excellent resource

I've been a fan of Ching and this book specifically for years. I've "borrowed" my brother's copy he used for school many times. He finally had to ask for it back.

This book is a great, really great resource. Certainly for a school setting, but also for a homeowner or DIY person. No, it won't make you a contractor, but it will definitely provide the basics of what is/isn't allowed, how a structure works, materials, etc. In fact, I think this book is so comprehensive that it can be a little hard to follow the text, even though it isn't poorly written and the topic isn't esoteric. There's just so much information at times I find myself a bit overwhelmed. This is when I take a small break and then get back to it.

This edition includes newer, more relevant content about "sustainable" building, recent developments in technology and building materials, as well as a companion website. If you're a serious DIY person or want to tackle a larger project, I think this book is a must have as it will provide far more information than an episode on HGTV or a seminar at the larger home centers. If you're a student in architecture or similar areas then this is probably part of your book list.

I really like this new edition, however, I DO agree with the other review about the print. It certainly is more faint and a little harder to read than the print in my brother's book (probably ten years old now). This is really the only bad thing I can say about it, but content wise, editing, writing, illustrations, et.al. I can't complain. Highly recommended.

I had very mixed feelings regarding this novel. The manner in which it is written is unusual; the sentences are very formal with few contractions, leaning towards a third person narrative.

This story is set in a wonderful underwater world of a dying paradise. The stilted formal society of mermaids and mermen is slowing losing it’s population through adversity, tragedy and prejudice. Our main character, Serena, is an intelligent mermaid full of a need to learn and a dangerous sense of curiosity which constantly leads her through a maze of peril and treachery. Through no choosing of her own, Serena becomes a liaison to their natural earth enemy, the werewolves.

This tale leads us through convoluted path of discovery and betrayal in a never ending history of war and politics.

The novel is a slow read, spun into an intricate web of ever widening concentric circles, and is definitely focused very much towards a ‘tweens market

If you are a young teenage reader, love mermaids and their underwater world that leads you through times of fun and more times of trouble, then this read is certainly for you.

Loved it. Great Cover - Great Triology

WHAT A RIDE!!!! Terra Harmony has an imagination that doesnt quit and the killer writing skills to pull you right into it. I was lucky enough to receive the entire The Painted Maidens Trilogy in one book. You would think that after the first installment or maybe two, I may want a break. Not so. I floated through these novels like I was there watching from the sidelines. I love books that suck me in so completely you forget you are actually reading and nothing around seems to exist.

The blurbs do a great job letting you know what the book is about so I wont bore you with all the details. I will tell you the character of the new Queen - Serena - is likable, relatable, and perfectly drawn. The world building is ridiculous! (In a good way, sorry I have been around my 12 year too much)

I sincerely enjoyed this Trilogy and will be recommending to all my fellow Fantasy readers.

This was really good. I couldn't put the book down. The story grabbed me right away and I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen. This is like Twilight with mermaids! I recommend this for a really fun read!

I've been working with my 6 month old shih tzu, every day for 7 weeks. This book gave me nothing new. It is a repeat of many other books. It just a few pages and full of nonsense. "Puppies should not eat their own poop." That's the kind of advice given.

Not much to say other than the guidelines put forth by Ken Phillips in this book are spot on. After day 7 with our 8week old German shepherd, we are accident and stress free. Excellent tips. Quick read. Makes sense.

Don't waste your money on this one

This was more like a pamphlet than a book. The author spends more words telling you why you should housebreak a puppy than telling you how to do it. Information is vague and general. A total waste of money and not what I was hoping to find.

About the Author

Hersey Cartwright

Hersey Cartwright has worked in the technology industry since 1996 in many roles, from help desk support to IT management. He first started working with VMware technologies in 2006. He is currently a solutions architect for SimpliVity, where he designs, sells, and supports VMware vSphere enterprise environments running on the SimpliVity Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) platform. He has experience of working with a wide variety of server and storage platforms. In 2012, he began preparing to submit a design to defend for his VMware Certified Design Expert. In February 2013, he successfully completed his defense and obtained VCDX. His VCDX number is #128. Since January 2011, he has been an instructor with the VMware IT Academy at Tidewater Community college where he teaches vSphere 5 and vSphere 6 classes. He designed and implemented the lab environment that is used by students in the virtualization and security programs offered at the Chesapeake Campus of Tidewater Community College. He enjoys teaching and learns a lot from teaching others about the benefits of virtualization. He actively participates in the VMware community, and he has been awarded the vExpert title every year since 2012. He has presented multiple ProfessionalVMware.com vBrownBags on vSphere administration, vSphere design, and vSphere disaster recovery. This book graciously keeps a good balance between datacenter design principles

Whether you are a seasoned architect who still is getting familiar with vSphere 6 or a hands-on engineer who likes to get a firmer grip on design and architecture using vSphere 6, Hersey’s updated datacenter cookbook just might be just the book you need.

This book graciously keeps a good balance between datacenter design principles, best practices and howto’s. In this book Hersey takes you by the hand and guides you through the steps needed to create a virtual datacenter design using vSphere 6.

Besides the necessary theoretical explanations Hersey offers his readers 75 recipes which they can use to help with the creation or optimization of a virtual datacenter design: What are the prerequisites you need for a design? Who do you have to talk to? What are goals, requirements, risks and assumptions? How do you create a conceptual, logical and physical design? How do you need to calculate how many CPU, RAM or storage you need? What are the new features in vSphere 6 which might be important to my design? What basic design documentation do you need to create and how do you create it?

Across both versions of Hersey’s book the design principles have remained the same but there is no denying that vSphere 6 has a lot of differences which set it apart from vSphere 5.x. As such Hersey’s design recipes which have been modified to reflect a vSphere 6 virtual datacenter design where needed, should be a welcome read for everyone.

The structure of the book:

This book contains one chapter more than its predecessor and caps now at 12 chapters. It goes without saying that datacenter security is becoming more and more important and as such security has been assigned its own chapter. Personally I think this is a very welcome addition.

Here are some of the highlights for me:

I really have tried to find my personal highlights in this book but the thing is, in a design all of items touched in the chapters of this book are equally important. To single out some chapters as I have done in some other reviews would not only do dishonor to this book but also to the design and architecture principles themselves.

So let me tell you why I think this book is great:

– A lot of aspiring architects have a tendency to look at architecture from a technical perspective first but a change in architecture should be driven by a business need. Hersey addresses this really well in the discovery process in chapter 2. In short: A discovery process is a mix of finding out what the business needs and discovering the design factors based on requirements, constraints, assumptions and risks.

– This book reads like someone is giving you an excellent classroom experience using only a book as a medium. Just like its predecessor, the second edition of Hersey’s book “VMware vSphere 6.x Datacenter Design Cookbook” has a very good and clear structure. Each chapter builds upon the previous chapters, and where needed examples are given.

– To me and many of my friends, acquaintances and peers who have joined me on the road to VCAP5-DCD, Hersey’s previous book was a must read while preparing for exam-day. We had a good reason to read the “VMware vSphere 5.x Datacenter Design Cookbook”: It explained in an easy to understand fashion many of the topics required to know to pass the VCAP5-DCD exam and the exercises in the book were easy to follow and understand as well. Personally I would advice anyone to add this book to the collection of books to read prior to taking the VCAP6-DCV Design exam.

Why this book stands out from the crowd:

As an instructor with the VMware IT Academy program at the Tidewater Community College Hersey Cartwright knows how important a good course structure is and how critical that structure is to make sure the message will come over loud and clear. This book is a very good example of good structure. The theory, the design principles and best practices in this book are explained in such a fashion that they are easy to follow.

If you are new to design and architecture, finding the right literature to get started might be daunting. Basic principles about good design and architecture should be easily understandable for people new to these topics. Hersey’s book is a real success in this.
