If youre into Kant....

Well obviously if youre into Kant you have to buy this book. Allen Wood (I took two courses with him last year) is perhaps The Kant Scholar alive today (him and Paul Guyer). Hes a really interesting guy to talk to as well: quite a radical, Marxist I think, and hes got a deep and I mean DEEP commitment to egalitarianism. This said his book which I bought last year was very interesting. Basically Wood tries to paint Kants ethical thought more attractively than most of us have usually seen it as. Some things I liked about the book were that he really proved his point about an overemphasis on the Formula of Universal Law, and his contention that Kant's ethical thought really is deeply rooted in his somewhat pessimistic realistic view of human nature. I think however that Wood often dismisses criticism or alternative viewpoints far too quickly and unconvincingly. This would be I think the main detraction in his work. Also the tone of the book at times is somewhat arrogant. Buy the book though. Very interesting reading, a bit dry at times, but in general a must read for someone interested in Kant.

An unknown facet of the US Navy comes to light and life.

The Sand Pebbles is the story of a small ship, on a small river deep in the heart of China. Unknown by most of the rest of the world but home to the crew of the ship. McKenna, a former Asiatic Fleet Sailor, describes life in the river gunboats of the 1920s with an accuracy and authenticity that is amazing. I could almost feel the heat of the engines and the aromas from the galley.
The book is a study of men in the Navy. They are far from the public eye, doing a job deemed essential by someone in Washington. They are essentially feared by the Chinese and despised by the American missionaries they come into contact with. It must have been a brutal emotional duty to carry out. Yet many men loved it. They spent their careers on the rivers and retired there when their time was up in the Navy.
Jake Holman, the central figure, is not better or worse than most other Sailors of that time. His motivation for joining the Navy were "...Army, Navy or reform school..." and so into the Navy he went. He is a competent machinest mate but has few real people skills. He is a loner on the outskirts of the Navy world. He has bounced from ship to ship and has now reached the end of the line. But even Holman makes friends in the ship as he tries to adapt to his surroundings.
It is an interesting look at the gunboat navy. The crew did military duties and drills but the day to day ship's husbandry were done by Chinese men. Is it any wonder the crew loved China duty once they got there.
One might say that the conclusion of the book is confusing and leaves you feeling troubled. Well it fits with the mission of the gunboat sailors and I think is perfect. Antiimperialists may condem the book and the subject but it was a real part of the American Navy and deserves to be remembered and respected.

A Classic

This is one of my favor novels, one that I would want on the proverbial desert island. I re-read it about once every ten years, and it's always fresh. This is a novel that can be enjoyed on many levels. It is an historical action-adventure story, with lots of pushing, shoving and fighting. It's a historical romance, in the tradition of Sir Walter Scott: a hero in an exotic foreign land, a long time past, fighting for what's right. It's a novel about Navy life, with lots of Navy procedures and protocol.
But to me it's more than that. It's a philosophic novel that asks the question, `Who's life is this?' I believe that in all our lives, there is a tension between what we would like to do, what we would like to be, and what the rest of the world tells us what we ought to do, indeed, what we will do. Our family pushes and pulls us in one direction, our employer in another direction, our community in another direction. Where does my own autonomy fit with the countless demands everybody else is making on me?
This is the essence of `The Sand Pebbles,' with the Navy acting a surrogate for society. The protagonist of this book, Jake Holeman is a misfit in life, forced into the Navy to avoid reform school, he drifts through the Navy without meaning or purpose until he learns to work on the ship's engines. It is only while he works on the engines that he finds fulfillment. Jake is not an anti-hero, he is smart and likable but he chafes at the many impositions society and the Navy place in his way. Everything in life is something he has to endure, except working on the engines.
Like an unappreciated artist who must paint or write, Jake Holeman must work on machinery. Machinery doesn't care who a man is, where he was born, or how good his manners are. Unlike the rest of the world, machinery can't be flattered, cajoled or ordered. It only cares how much you know. If you know how it works, it will perform wonders; if you don't, if you try to con it, it could kill you. At first it appears Jake has found the perfect ship, a small gunboat patrolling some obscure river in an obscure part of China. Jake is the senior engineer, and as long as he keeps the ship running, life will be perfect. But no man can live is he chooses, there are always others who will tell you what you will do.
So what happens to when you decide to live life on their own terms, to answer only to your own conscience? The world strikes back, and the results are tragic. Yet the tension remains, if we are to live life instead of just exist in it, we have to, by our own nature, push and shove back. Everybody dies, but few actually live. It would be a shame if they book were forgotten.
This book was made into a great movie with Steve McQueen playing the lead character, but the books offers so much more detail. If you enjoyed the movie, you will be delighted with the book. Buy the book and re-read it every ten years to see how your life is going.

Entertaining and informative memoir about Soviet life by an American

I had this book for several years before finally reading it as part of of fit of interest in Soviet era books (I had just read John Gunther's Inside Russia Today from 1957 and Svetlana Alliluyeva's "20 Letters To a Friend"). Feifer's memoirs of his time as a student in Moscow are both revealing of daily life in the USSR and full of often extremely amusing stories related to him by others he met there. As an intimate (and sexually explicit) glimpse into the daily lives of Soviet citizens and their dealings with the Party, this book is quite valuable.

And much more than that, it is a story of the ordinary lives of Muscovites who survive, not only brutal winters, but the petty defeats inflicted on them by Russia's totalitarian regime, yet still manage to find modest relief and pleasure by means of their own independent character. Read Tolstoy, read Dostoyevsky and Pushkin and Chekov. But Feifer stands right along side them. Read Moscow Farewell, you won't be disappointed.

The Ultimate Vampire Armageddon Novel

They Thirst was the novel that marked the maturity of McCammon's scope as a novelist. With his three previous novels, he inched closer and closer to the greatness and national acclaim he would eventually achieve with Swan's Song. But with this novel, he finally made his mark as a horror novelist to be reckoned with.

They thirst is a grand, apocalyptic novel of a vampire plague that threatens to decimate Los Angeles, and McCammon deftly handles multiple characters caught in the blood-sucking maelstrom. The early parts of the novel present a highly plausible version of how a vampire colony could begin in a city such as LA, the city of angels, the city of lights, the city of both reason and freakish insanity. The police are slow to believe that anything supernatural could be taking place as cemeteries are desecrated in the most startling way, bodies are found in a mysterious state of near-death, and an inner-city barrio is besieged. Plausible explanations such as a group of satanists, escalating Latino gang warfare, and just the every-day weirdness of LA life are offered.

But one cop, an immigrant from Hungary who, as a child, experienced the horrors of a vampire attack on his small village, suspects something much darker in play. He, along with an investigative reporter for an exploitation newspaper, an up-and-coming comedian with a girlfriend who is a practitioner of vodun, and a young child schooled in the horror films Hollywood itself produced are all that stands between the survival of the human race and a dark new age of the vampire.

McCammon's vampires are not the urbane figures from Stoker and Le Fanu; rather, they are savage, deviant, and oh so thirsty. Imagine Dawn of the Dead, but with Vampires, and you have an idea of what this novel holds in its pages. After a gradual build-up, LA finds itself buried in the most massive sandstorm ever to hit the modern world, a sandstorm brought about by the dark forces of the vampire master. McCammon presents a terrifying vision of LA as hit by an apocalypse of biblical proportions and only a brave few stand between humanity and its extinction.

To say that this novel is gripping would be an understatement. This book demands to be read in one stay-up-all-night-and-call-in-sick-to-work session. Yes, it's that good.

Effective but overwrought early effort by McCammon

I read this novel when it was first released as a young man enthralled with all things Stephen King. In between King books, I was looking for something else horror-related and stumbled across "They Thirst" in my local drugstore. I ravenously read the entire book over a 3 day weekend and liked, but didn't love it. I always felt like it was trying to one-up King's own vampire epic, "Salem's Lot," with a dose of "The Stand" thrown in for good measure. Years later I took advantage of a special sale on this title in Kindle format, primarily because in the intervening years my opinion of McCammon's work has risen to the point that I prefer him to King by a wide margin over the last 20+ years. Unfortunately, while it was a bit better in some ways than I remembered, it still felt half-baked and over-baked, all at the same time. Longer and more drawn out than necessary, there is the core of a great story here and there are some really inspired individual scenes scattered throughout. But all of it doesn't gel as effectively as almost everything after this book would for McCammon. Worth the time investment, but with the understanding that the author's best works were still ahead of him at this stage of his career.

Normally Vampire stories do not interest me.

Intersesting plot evolution, There are two primary Vampires, the Headmaster and his student Lord Vulkan. The premise is that with some help from the headmaster, Lord Vulkan will create a Vampire army and use it to take over LA, then America and finally the world.

While I liked the plot, some parts are bit dull while some are frenetic. There are some aspects of the plot not explained (what do the V's eat when the conversion is complete -- to my knowlege this is not addressed. I suppose that in fantasy, anything is possible.) But such quibbles don't damage the stprie. So these minor misgings aside, If you like either Vampires or R McCammon, you will like this. If nothing else download the kindle sample read that (if you dont have kindle reader you can read the sample from kindle cloud ap on a laptop or desktop.) Incidentally, the kindle version works very well with Android Kindle.

OK for experienced programmers new to C#

Update (4/6/2003): I feel it's important to modify my rating and approval of the book relative to some of the additional texts I've since read. I also applied an edit to correct a misunderstanding on my part and added some additional material. I still agree with most of my original thoughts on the book, but feel the book isn't thorough enough to be called "Mastering." I've since discovered the Applications Development in .Net books by Robert Oberg and crew (they have a very nice line of introductory and intermediate/advanced texts for both C# and VB.Net from Prentice Hall), and feel these books are superior in explaining the languages and their overall context in the .Net world. They also have somewhat more useful examples. The Price and Gunderloy book is still decent, and I still hold by my audience recommendations, but I feel an overall score of 2.5 to 3 stars is more appropriate.

This book is reasonably well written and easy to read. It's a decent overview of both the C# language and .Net, so it's a good first book for programmers trying to understand these new technologies, but I'm not so sure I would recommend it to pure programming beginners.
As one review stated there are cases where some important concepts are not as thoroughly covered as they could be. There are also some inconsistencies and small lapses that shouldn't hurt experienced programmers, but may confuse novices. An example is the case where they discuss the difference between using the 'override' and 'new' keywords with methods; they give a good general explanation, but mention that there are exceptions. They do not, however, identify the exceptions, and this may leave more curious and experienced developers hanging. The code examples in the book are useful, but as another reviewer stated, they are often reprinted at the end of the section which results in a lot of redundant pages where additional examples would have been more welcome.
The tradeoff for the surface skimming approach is that the book's pace, for the right audience, is swift. Experienced developers, and especially JAVA or C coders, will rip through the first third of the book and get a good basic understanding of the C# syntax. The authors don't compare JAVA and C# in the way Bruce Eckels does with C++ and JAVA in his Thinking in JAVA text, which would have been a useful approach for JAVA developers, but their approach leaves the book a bit more accessible.
I was also pleased that with few exceptions the examples all compiled and ran. I've worked with some books where there were errors in the examples and this made active learning more troublesome. The exception is that in defining database access in some of the last chapters, I had to do a little more tinkering to get access rights to the SQL Server database working. I think the book would be better if it skipped the chapter on SQL and expanded the ADO.NET chapter to include security/signon and setup issues with databases with .Net objects.
It is true that the chapters in the middle and last thirds of the book probably don't also contain as much detail as those experienced in .Net and ASP might prefer, but again, the collective approach of the book gives the experienced developer new to .Net and C# a quick trip through the languange and how it integrates with .Net. One problem it has in common with a lot of programming books is that the examples are a little too simple. You will know how to build a Web service in C# with VS.Net when you are done with this book, but it won't do much and the intricacies of distributed computing aren't really deeply discussed.

Unquestionably a good first C# book

If you are familiar with OOP/C++/Java and want to pick up main C# concepts in a hurry, get this book. Although I did read Tom Archer's "Inside C#" before this one, and some tutorials on the net, I think this book deserves to be the first C# book for a beginner or an intermediate programmer. It has a decent aggregation & coherent explanantions of all the major C# topics and uses Visual Studio.NET IDE in its examples (which I think is really important for a C# book). One minor drawback is that some important topics(like Web Services and .NET Remoting) are given just a cursory treatment. But I guess, such vast topics merit devoted books just for those. Beware however, I came across 2 critical bugs - Ch 12, first page it says method signature is composed of method name,return type and parameter list (actually its just the parameter list and method name) and on page 794, chapter on ADO.NET it says to use Fill method on DataSet object to synchronize changes made to the DataSet with Database(in reality you should use Update method). It even gives an introduction to ASP.NET and ADO.NET but you have to look for other sources to learn those technologies well.

Overall, its a good book to invest your money and time in.

About the Author
Richard G. Netemeyer is the Ralph E. Beeton Professor of Free Enterprise in the Marketing Division and Senior Associate Dean at the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. He received his Ph.D. in Business Administration with a specialization in Marketing from the University of South Carolina in 1986. He was a member of the Marketing faculty at the E. J. Ourso School of Business at Louisiana State University from 1986 to 2001. In 2001, he joined the McIntire School of Commerce. Professor Netemeyer’s research has appeared in the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Applied Psychology, OBHDP, Marketing Science, American Journal of Psychiatry, American Journal of Public Health, and others. He is a co-author of two textbooks pertaining to measurement and psychometrics, and is a member of the editorial review boards of Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, and the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing.

William O. Bearden is the Distinguished Professor Emeritus and former Bank of America Chaired Professor of Marketing at the University of South Carolina. He is currently on the editorial review boards of JCR, JMR, JM, and JCP. He served as an Associate Editor for JCR during 1999-2002. Professor Bearden has received both the University Amoco Teaching Award, that is presented annually to one faculty member, and the University Mungo Award for Teaching Excellence. He has twice has been awarded the Moore School of Business Teacher of the Year Award and recognized as a faculty initiate in Mortar Board, ODK, Beta Gamma Sigma, and Golden Key, and received the 2004 University Educational Foundation Research Award for Professional Schools and the 2005 University Trustee Professorship Award. Professor Bearden serves as the University SEC Faculty Athletic Representative and received the first Distinguished Service Award from the Journal of Consumer Research in 2006. His research interests include consumer behavior, marketing research, pricing, and the evaluation of promotions. He was faculty co-director for the University Lilly Teaching Fellows Program from 1992-1995. Bill has published over twenty-five articles in the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of Marketing, and the Journal of Consumer Research, as well as having a number of other publications. He has coauthored Marketing Principles and Perspectives, 5th Edition, 2006, Irwin/McGraw-Hill, Inc.

Dr. Subhash Sharma is James F. Kane Professor of Marketing, Marketing Department, Darla Moore School of Business, the University of South Carolina.
