Another Keeper of a Short Story

I had the privilege of reading CHRISTMAS ON HENDERSON'S RANCH on M.L. Buchman's website on the 14th of last month. For readers and fans who are unaware, I highly recommend subscribing to Buchman's newsletter, as subscribers are reminded about free short stories on his website during "Ides of Matt", the 14th of each calendar month.

I'm a huge The Night Stalkers series fan. I enjoyed this one, too, though it's far less about soldiers in a hot zone and far more about downtime, family, Christmas, and man-against-nature. Doug and Chelsea fall quick, hard and fast. It works, because of the characters' pasts, situations, and circumstances. Doug doesn't flinch away from the realization he's in love with Chelsea, and she doesn't, either. Chelsea's been all over the world, wandered through myriad cultures, languages, mountain peaks and valleys. "But she knew. Her wandering days were done." I found several sweet, tender bits of dialogue I absolutely had to highlight as I read. Kudos, again, to Buchman, for another keeper of a short story. THANK YOU!

Violence: a little, but very mild
Recommended to fans of The Night Stalkers Series and to fans of military romantic suspense who should keep in mind that this short is far more "off duty" than many of Buchman's books.

Great read, my uncle gave me a copy of the original notes from Lewis and Clark's expedition, but that reads like a research book not entertaining. I can't remember the title, but this book captures the history and is very enjoyable to read.

A good but brief overview of the expedition, although at times it moved a little too fast and I would have liked more detail. Maps would also have been helpful. In a few places needed better editing. I liked that it brought closure by describing what happened to some of the main characters.

A fairly good text book

This book does give a good idea of the subject. However, I found that it is rather basic, and is suitable more as a text book, and not for the purpose that I was looking. As a person experienced in business and manufacturing, and having recently entered the retail segment, I was looking for a book that would give me more in-depth information on the subject.

About the Author

Alberto Gonz�lez (PhD, The Ohio State University) is professor and chair in the Department of Communication at Bowling Green State University. His research has appeared in various journals including Quarterly Journal of Speech, Southern Communication Journal, Communication Quarterly, Western Journal of Speech Communication, Intercultural Communication Studies, Women & Language, and Journal of Poverty.

Yea-Wen Chen (PhD, University of New Mexico) is assistant professor in the School of Communication Studies at Ohio University. Her research addresses issues of cultural identities, ideologies, and social justice within intercultural relationships across local and global contexts. Her work appears in such journals as Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, Howard Journal of Communications, and Journal of Intercultural Communication Research, and she also contributes invited book chapters and to online publications.

Ineffective presentation and weak on mutlivariable analysis

I purchased this book (7th, ISBN=*405) as my first book on Marketing Research. However, this book is very disappointing; multivariable analysis sections are superficial in treatment. In particular, the authors avoid math treatment once basic statistics sections are over. I don't understand the techniques described in those multivariable analysis sections based on whatfs written in this book; I already have the understandings in some of the topics discussed in the book, so I know what I am talking about partly. Also the rest of non-statistical sections are very boring to read, and examples are in some cases not easy to relate to the material in the context directly. What makes me most bored might be authors explaining trivial things like "Hospital is the place to go when you get sick....g (Analogy) Considering the quality of this book in terms of depth, this book is way overpriced. I recommend the following books instead: Business Research Methods by Zikmund (much clear presentation on methodologies), and Probability and Statistics by DeGroot (one of the best in these subjects) for non-multivariable sections, and for multivariable sections, Applied Multivariate Statistical Analysis by Wichern and Johnson (for math taste), and Multivariate Data Analysis by Anderson, et al (for non-math taste). Also recommended is Data Mining Practical Machine Learning Tools and Techniques with Java Implementations by Witten and Frank (for Data Mining programming). P.S. this 7th ISBN=*405 does not include CDROM.

Good overview but weak in substance

Considering that this book was written by the King of Marketing Research and Brand Management, Prof. David Aaker, I had expected more in a graduate-level textbook. However, the examples are simplistic, cases are weak, and the section on statistical methods and analysis would be better omitted in favor of a statistics-specific textbook.

Description of methods, rather than a teaching guide

This book is a collection of marketing research techniques described at lenght. Serves well as a reference to what happens (conceptually) in each technique. It does not serve as a teaching guide, since there is very little description of the actual procedures involved in performing the techniques. Additionally, almost no information on the actual statistics behind each technique.

Faded Glory

I began using this book for a class on death and dying when it was in its third edition. I wrote a very favorable review here at that time. I stopped using this book at the seventh edition. I just purchased the ninth edition, hoping to be pleasantly surprised by new insights and information. I was disappointed. The price has gone up dramatically, I would say unjustifiably, yet the content is remarkably similar to that third edition. I have kept several editions over the years,for comparison, and the changes and updates have been mostly cosmetic. The authors, or the publisher, have taken their early success with this text for granted. Now they are milking it for residuals. It's a shame, it was ahead of its time when it came out. Now it is just barely visible in the light of its faded glory. There are better, and less expensive texts on the market.

Fascinating book

This text book is so well written that I could read it for fun! I had to read it for a college class, but I looked forward to reading it because it wasn't too "textbooky". It covers a wide range of topics from death in the lives of children to suicide to hospice care. It even covers the stuff that is too "taboo" for some people and questions that most people wouldn't want to ask. Great read and I will keep this book to refer to during my lifetime.

A must read!

I recently read this book for a death and dying psychology class at the college attend and it is fantastic. Each chapter brings you into a new world of death and dying with facts that I never knew before. Although I read this book for an academic class I have suggested it to friends that are either interested in the subject or are coping with loss in thier life, they have all responded positively to the book. From an academic view point the book is great because it is accompanied with a web site that has a plethora of study tools for students to use like practice test for each chapter and flash cards. Not only do I recommend this book for a college course but also for any one who is curious about digging deeper into the world of death, dying, and bereavement.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Wayne Laroche M.Sc. is a biologist living in Vermont who holds degrees in both wildlife and fisheries management. He has worked as a research biologist for major universities, research laboratories and consulting firms from coast to coast publishing more than a dozen scientific research papers. He has recently finished an eight year stint as Commissioner (Director) of the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife where he made significant improvements in the science based management of Vermont's white-tailed deer herd. He is an avid deer hunter who has hunted and studied whitetail deer for more than 40 years. He doesn't claim to be the greatest deer hunter or tracker in the world. He enjoys the pursuit.
