Memories for me

This love story made me think of a couple of my first loves. That all consuming desire to be together all the time and the hot kisses from a first love. Especially for a 64 year old. Just don't like details too descriptive in the sex leave something to the imagination :)

Excellent experiential guide to spiritual formation

As the author states in her Introduction, this book is primarily experiential and interactive. As such, it is highly usable in both form and function.

The book is DESIGNED with wide margins containing quotations that illuminate the text, questions to contemplate, suggestions for written reflection, and space enough to scribble ones notes.

The CONTENT treats eight disciplines: spiritual reading, praying, worshiping, fasting, examination of conscience, spiritual guidance, hospitality and developing a "rule of life". Thompson concentrates on one practice per chapter, and includes historical, theological, and biblical references, along with practical exercises to "learn" the discipline. Chapters vary in length (13-20 pages) and end with Footnotes. An Annotated Biliography and Group Study Guide complete the book; both are excellent.

The author provides strong, gentle guidance in a voice that is clear and direct. Her approach is inclusive of all Christians, transcending liturgical and dogmatic differences. This ecumenical approach is evident in quotations and works cited.

Another reviewer described Soul Feast as "a watered-down version" of Richard Foster's *Celebration of Discipline. I understand this reviewer's passion for Foster's book; it's excellent and well-written. I use both Celebration and Soul Feast to help guide my spiritual formation. They both cover many of the same disciplines, but treat them differently. And though there are differences, Soul Feast is not derivitive. (For the record, Soul Feast is not "full of footnotes to Foster"; of 92 footnotes, 6 note Foster) Foster includes chapters on simplicity, solitude, submission and service -- each treated separately -- while Thompson integrates them with other practices. Thompson includes a chapter on creating a "rule of life", Foster does not. Soul Feast tends to be more hands-on, something that's reinforced by its format. Foster tends to be more informational, Thompson formational. Thompson's style is strong, Foster imposing. Yin and yang; I like them both. I use them both. Many do.

SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

Countless books have been written on Christian spirituality from a theological, intellectual and historical perspective. All of them have strengths which deepens our appreciation of spirituality. Spirituality, however, is to be lived and practiced in the lives of believers. Thus these books fall short in emphasizing spiritual practice. Soul Feast corrects this by inviting the reader to enter the spiritual through the practice of the spiritual disciplines. It is through these disciplines that we can live out a spiritual life. This is a balanced text which thouroughly integrates theory and practice with a greater emphasis on the latter. Protestants, whose background doesn't include the spiritual discipline will be greatful in rediscovering them. Spiritual direction and hospitality are just a few of them discussed in this valuable work.

I Only Give 5 Stars to Life Changing Books

I will give this book 5 stars for one chapter alone. Much of what one finds in this book may be found in other locations. However, the last chapter contains the clearest teaching I've ever read on developing a personal Rule of Life. If all of the other pages were blank, this book would be worth the money and worth 5 stars.
Of course, the rest of the pages are not blank. I found myself highlighting many passages.

A good, but thin, primer

Virtual Music is a solid primer, an introduction really, to how music came to be put on the web as a discrete medium. He begins with a brief history of the development of the type of ideas needed to make the conceptual leap to technology, then describes how particular artists, including himself, made music that is specifically for the medium of the web. The accompanying CD has examples of all the music discussed.

What the book is not, however, is any kind of set of instructions for how to make music for the web. Duckworth is very specific in not touching on this topic - that's up to the musician. That's not a fault, but a focus. However, the book is rather thin, there is much more history to describe, and much more discussion about each topic. The writing is serviceable, nothing more. This is an important part of contemporary music history, and Virtual Music competently lays the foundation for filling that gap.

This history covers everything from file sharing and the creation of one of the first interactive works of music and art on the web by composer/musician Duckworth to the possibilities of nanotechnology and controversial new musics developing in the online world only. If you were a sudent at the time of Still Nash and Young, Chicago Transit Autohority, "Jesus freaks" and protests against Vietnam war you must have bought the original version of this book. Full of facts, names, adresses, direct advice on sensitive subjects. It was our bible. This book is full of practical and inspiring solutions for free people like you and me.

this was a huge book.

A huge book physically and one in
sales. Many people back then wanted to learn different ways to deal with things and situations, they would be horrified by the endless plastic bags laying all over the place today. This book was about solutions and it's day was long ago but the memories of looking at it and seeing what people thought were incredible . Anyone who wanted to make a statement back then had this book on their table , from actors to politicians. It was that huge, and the public loved it too. At least for the 6 years or so it was around.

The way it was...

If you weren't there, then this review is for you. The Whole Earth Catalog was not so much a catalog, as a service reviewing stuff, and ideas, and movements in the late sixties and early to mid seventies. You could not be a hippy without a copy of this book, or an environmentalist, or any number of things. But the real purpose the book had was to open the minds of the many to the most ragged edge of contemporary thought. For example:

Richard Buckminster Fuller- 'Bucky' Fuller was fairly obscure outside of the acolytes of the whole earth catalog. The same could be said of a hundred other big thinkers, from Paolo Soleri (arcology) to Gregory Bateson (crack in the cosmic egg)to Jerzy Grotowski to Allesandro Jodorowski. The WEC is the who's who in hip thinking.

Swiss Army Knives- I swear, the WEC put a swiss army knife in the pocket of every hippy on the planet. (some of us still carry them today) Synthesizers (if you are a synthesizer head, read Walter Carlos's essay about them. Garden Tools, hand operated winches, drywall screws and other tools too numerous to mention.

Nomadics- I had never even thought of the idea of being a portable lifestyle until the WEC. Now I am old and a homeowner, but I am still nomadic.

and so on. The WEC (of which this is a reprint) was followed by the LAST WHOLE EARTH CATALOG (that's the big seller) the Whole Earth Epilog, and the Millenium Catalog. The Point Foundation (who published the WEC) also published a magazine, originally called the Co-Evolution Quarterly (or CEQ) which then became the Whole Earth Software Review, and then The Whole Earth Review, and then just Whole Earth. They went out of print, finally in 2003--having brought us thousands of pages on every topic imaginable. The spirit lives on in the WELL (Whole Earth Lectric Link) a venerable online community of smart people (now hosted on salon)

I grew up in Huntington Beach, California. In the sixties the WEC put me onto an entire world of stuff and ideas not available locally. My friends all read the catalog, we all exchanged gifts found in the catalog. We all wore anne kalso earth shoes, levis, chambris work shirts and had long hair. We all read dan o'neill comics, we all laughed at the firesign theater, we all sang folk music. Today we are computer programmers, social workers, architects and college professors. We DID change the world, in so many ways. If you weren't there you don't see the changes, you just see the world as it is. This book is fantastically important, but I doubt a modern young person can even hear the melody.

Excellent inexpensive guide to engineering acoustics

If you are an engineering or physics student and you would like an inexpensive guide to acoustics with plenty of worked examples and solved problems, this little book is for you. The title page doesn't say so, but it is actually entitled "Schaum's Outline on the Theory and Problems of Acoustics", just so that you know the format. I bought this guide back in 1980 when work required that I obtain a computational knowledge of acoustics that was deeper than what I had acquired in college. All of the basic theory is there, and by going through the solved problems and then working the exercises at the end of each chapter I became proficient in the science of acoustics without the need of any other expensive books. There are plenty of diagrams, and the author even relates topics to electric circuits when possible, making this guide especially valuable to engineers with a basic knowledge of electric circuits. It is a shame it is out of print, so if you ever see a used copy for sale you might want to grab it. This guide is for engineers, so a knowledge of physics, calculus, and differential equations is presumed. This book will probably be incomprehensible to recording/studio professionals. The table of contents is as follows:
1. Vibrations and Waves - Vibrations, energy of vibrations, vibration of strings, longitudinal vibration of bars, vibration of membranes, vibration of circular plates.

About the Author
Jean-Paul Sartre was a prolific philosopher, novelist, public intellectual, biographer, playwright and founder of the journal Les Temps Modernes. Born in Paris in 1905 and died in 1980, Sartre was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1964—and turned it down. His books include Nausea, Intimacy, The Flies, No Exit, Sartre’s War Diaries, Critique of Dialectical Reason, and the monumental treatise Being and Nothingness.

Quintin Hoare is the director of the Bosnian Institute and has translated numerous works by Sartre, Antonio Gramsci, and other French authors. He lives in the United Kingdom.

Poor Print Quality

Although I'm very happy to see Verso reissuing The Freud Scenario, those who prefer hardcovers should be advised of the particularly poor print quality of this item. Even though this is a thick text, the hardcover does not have sewn signatures but a single sheet glued spine. If you've purchased a hardcover from Continuum, like Badiou's Logics of Worlds, you'll know the type of binding I'm referring to. Additionally, the quality of the cover itself is not cloth, but more of a fiber infused blue masking tape. The blue dye used in the cover frequently smears on the ends of the book, turns white at creases, and the print quality of the pages is itself rather poor, resembling xerox copies in which the letter forms of the font used are frequently incomplete. Indeed the entire hardcover (including the nondescript courier font lettering on the spine) resembles those available through self-publishing companies like Lulu.

Text is a basic source for students of Latin America or LGBT. The book brings together various colonial sources to highlight LGBT history in Latin America. Given is the description of cross dressing indigene priests in Peru, homosexuality within the Church in Brasil, and Sahagun's description of indigene LGBT in Mexico. Well worth your time

This is a (mostly) informative, well-researched group of essays focusing on new ideas of third genderism among pre-Conquest Americans. They are all pretty readable for the casual reader who knows something of history and queer theory. A caution to the casual reader (who may not care about the political fights in the field of Anthropology): the second essay is mean-sprited and strident, from a distinctly homophobic viewpoint. I'm not quite sure why it was included. So, skip it, and enjoy the rest.

Filling in the gaps in history

Students who have taken high school and college history courses may recall their lectures and textbooks had huge voids in some areas. One of these gaps was usually sexuality, and probably none more so than that of same gender sexuality.

"Infamous Desire" goes a long ways towards filling this void in our education, especially as it pertains to Latin America.

The book is comprised of seven articles, mostly divided by geography and time.

"Infamous Desire" reveals the full range of male-to-male intimacy that is known to have existed in the colonial years. Special emphasis is given to what was felt about these practices from the point of view of the individual state, the Roman Catholic Church and popular culture. It also describes types of punishment, those meted by the state as well as the Catholic Church, particularly from the Holy Inquisition. The book is heavy in annotation and footnotes.

For those looking for sexual titillation, this book is not for you. The dry academic treatment of the material can make, at times, for boring reading. This work will be useful, however, to teachers and students alike who seek a more comprehensive picture of the Colonial era in Latin America.
