Great Machine Design Textbook

This book is pretty easy to understand, but it's short on images. I had to read a lot of text to understand the concepts. It is very clear in its descriptions; however. It's fairly easy to navigate around this book. It's created for people who are studying Machine Design. It's a textbook, so nothing like a plot.

NOT MACHINE DESIGN: KINEMATICS INSTEAD

We need more of these textbooks. Kinematics is the geometric equivalent for Machine Design which any respectable ABET accredited University once required to know. CAD/CAM does not replace this even software companies want you to think it does.

Kinematics with direct applications to the most commonly used Machine Design areas is a must to know.

I won't rate this book as excellent because it is an overly simplified book on Kinematics. A more in-depth textbook on Kinematics is Mechanism Design, Analysis and Synthesis Vol I, by Erdman and Sandor.

Unfortunately, their Vol I and especially Vol II are extremely hard to find, not to mention any in-depth books on Kinematics. Also, the difference in depth between this book and Erdman's is vast and Erdman's was often overkill for the 3rd year ME student.

This is an excellent first exposure but by no means is it thee book on the subject.

DO NOT BY THIS BOOK!!

It appears this book was edited very poorly from the third edition to the fourth edition. For example we would be assigned homework problems at the end of each chapter the answers to the odd problems are in the back of the book but most of the answers are from the third edition text there were very few answers in the back of the book that were correct we know because our instructor had both editions of the book. There are numerous typos through out the book incorrect units bad equations the whole chapter on cams is useless none of the cam displacement equations work we had to use another reference when we got to the cam section. About the only thing in this book that was accurate was the graphical portions of each chapter that was it. I do not recommend this book if you need to learn anything about kinematics evaluated analytically.

Gr 4–6—It's the fall of 1964, just after the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Trip Westbrook lives with his parents in Jackson, MI. They have a black maid, Willie Jane, who serves as a sort of second mother to Trip and his sisters. When Trip invites Willie Jane's son, Dee, to join in for a game of football in the front yard, he unwittingly sets off a chain reaction of bigotry and harassment. But it's when he tries to bring Dee to lunch at the all-white country club that the tightly knit community turns inside out. This is an unusual book. There is a solid coming-of-age story and there is some football, though the cover design may throw off some readers: students who come looking for typical sports fiction might be disappointed. While a pick-up game is the occasion for the events that drive the plot, the sport itself is a small fraction of the story. At times the action is intense. True to usage at the time, Kitchings's narrator refers to African Americans as "colored" and "Negroes." The use of a more offensive epithet is limited, but does occur repeatedly. The scenes in which Trip is persecuted by the ignorant Bethune brothers (and their hateful father) are compelling and cringe-inducing. Nonetheless, the racist violence, verbal and physical, is historically significant and amount to a stinging indictment of the hypocrisies of the culture. About the Author
Taylor Kitchings’ roots in Mississippi run many generations deep, though it took him a while to circle back to them. As a college freshman, he recorded the original album Clean Break, now considered a collector’s item. As a junior, he wrote music for mallet and giant M�bius strip, performed at Manhattan’s Caf� La MaMa. In the years between his BA from Rhodes College and MA from Ole Miss, he traveled from Memphis to New York to Europe, writing and performing songs on piano.� He and his wife Beth have two children and live in Ridgeland, Mississippi, where he teaches English at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School.� His short story “Mr. Pinky Gone Fishing” was published in the collection Tight Lines from Yale University Press.�Yard War is his first novel.

A compelling, important story.

This book is probably one of the best historical coming of age tales I have ever read. The author does a magnificent job of capturing the period, and gives his young narrator a voice that is authentic and compelling from page one. When I requested this book I had no idea what it was about. I was expecting just a common story of school conflict. What I discovered was a surprisingly effective examination of one boy's experience in the South as the country was trying to enact the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Yard War is a powerful story that will resonate with and educate young readers unfamiliar with the period. The language will likely startle and offend readers, as the characters use racial slurs that were common during this period. Their inclusion is not gratuitous and only adds to the authenticity of the story. The author perfectly captures Trip's feelings as he grows more aware of the world around him and makes that ever important discovery that adults don't have all the answers and that sometimes their answers are wrong.

With characters that are well developed, dialogue filled with energy, and a huge amount of heart, this story of A Yard War brings a very important part of history to life for children in grades 5 to 8. It's hard to believe that this is the author's first novel. I will be eager to see what he offers up next. This is one you shouldn't miss.

For the Target Audience, Excellent Perspective on History and Race Relations Following the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ...

For the target audience – readers age 8-12 years of age - “Yard War” provides a very relatable perspective on history and on race relations following the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Taylor Kitchings understands readers in the target audience and writes with knowledge of the subject matter and the attitudes that were prevalent in the Deep South during the mid-1960’s.

A seventh grader, Trip Westbrook lives in Jackson, Mississippi. The son of a doctor, his only personal contact with “…colored people …” is with “…Willie Jane…Meemaw’s maid or a waiter at the club or a guy at the Texaco…” Na�ve about race relations and the attitudes of others, Trip thinks of Willie Jane not as working for the family, but as “…my other mama…” He believes that if someone were to visit his neighborhood, his school, or his church, they would find nice people not people “…trying to hurt colored people…” When Trip invites Willie Jane’s son Dee to play football with him, Trip’s friends at first resist but because of his skill, eventually accept Dee. As Trip and Dee develop a deeper friendship, the conflict with Trip’s grandparents and the threats toward the Westbrook family intensify. Circumstances result in their taking a firm stand against racism.

Using the first person narrative in “Yard War”, Taylor Kitchings creates a very personal and very compelling story. Trip is maturing and beginning to have more his own opinions about what is right and what is wrong. Yet, Trip retains some of the naivet� – he believes his Pawpa when he is told that if he found a good “colored person” he would take him to lunch at the Country Club. When Trip takes Dee to the Club, he is surprised that Pawpa does not mean what he said.

“Yard War” is an excellent story and one that teaches some of the history of race relations to the target audience. It depicts generational conflicts realistically and the personal sacrifices that resulted for many affected individuals. The hypocrisy of church-going individuals, including his grandparents, who taught children “…Jesus loves all the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white …” troubles Trip. Trip’s mother represents those individuals whose dilemma is that they are caught between respecting their parents and doing what they know is right. His father, whose background is not one of privilege, wants to protect his family. Dr. Westbrook must decide between whether to do so at the cost of compromising his personal beliefs and integrity or whether to take a stand against injustice and prejudice.

Language, racial references, and attitudes portrayed through “Yard War” are realistic. While the terms used in the novel are not used today, they were common at the time the novel takes place. “Yard War” provides an excellent opportunity for parents to discuss with their children the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the changes in attitude that have taken place and the changes that have yet to be effected.

I got this for my son. My son is black and is being raised by white parents so I thought this wonderful story would help him understand the legacy of racism in America just a bit but the evening news these days seems to also accomplish that task. We've had some wonderful discussions about race as he gets through this story. Taylor Kitchings has written a wonderful story.

Disapointed

Back in the bad old days, if you wanted to read hot BDSM fantasies you were stuck with the bodice-rippers in which the anti-hero used rationale like "your mouth is saying no, but your body is saying yes...and if it isn't yet, I'll spank you until it does," to justify raping the spineless heroine. But it was all OK, because he loooved her. I've enjoyed Joey W. Hill's stuff because I don't have to actively ignore the pretext in order to enjoy the hot, steamy beatings and screaming orgasms. There is usually some indication the submissive has consented to or actually sought to be overpowered.

Unfortunately, in "Board Resolution," Joey W. Hill seems to be paying a homage to the old bodice-ripper style...with the twist that, if you love someone, it's not just OK to rape her; it's OK to invite your closest friends to rape her. Because they're fond of her too, right? Plus, she's a virgin and sexually repressed, so she really needs to be molested by all of you and filmed while doing it so that she knows what she wants.

Sorry, this is gross.

Holy hot sauce Batman I think I need to change my undies.

WHAT. A. SCORCHER.

I actually thought I knew a fair bit about this book before I started reading....well the main jist of it anyway.... or the part I was most excited about anyway, A career woman gets her groove on with five guys whilst in a boardroom.

And seriously, those few words were enough for me. I mentally raised my hand and screamed `Pick me, pick me....oh please for the love of God, PICK ME.'

But I was actually surprised. It wasn't a sausage eating contest where the one female contestant needed to devour as much edible man meat at one time. It wasn't like a porno scene....actually scratch that....it wasn't like a sleazy porno scene, it was actually quite nice in a XXX, `5 men are gunna give it to you' kind of way.

I don't want to give anything away - other than the huge amount of sex part - but I LOVED how the emphasis was on Savannah's enjoyment. It was utterly and completely about her.

The only thing that stopped me from giving a full blown 5 heart rating was that my mind couldn't get around the sexual contraption the men used on Savannah. And this wasn't an `author can't describe it properly' issue, it was a `reader has ADD and can't concentrate enough to figure out the configuration of the contraption' issue.

The best part??? The best part by far was the ending. I adored Matt. He was a damn sweet character in such a scorching hot read. I can't get over it. It was quite simply sigh worthy.

Fun Read

The only thing that kept me from a five star was that I could have used a little more build up about the relationships in this story. I don't want to spoil but I felt kinda put off by how easily the Alpha shared his woman with the other men. It was hot, and there was a good deal of emotion involved, but I felt like it could have benefited from an extra chapter about who these people are before they begin having sex.

Full of fun songs

This Strum & Sing book offers so many great songs from Jason Mraz. It's easy for beginning guitarist to sound good using the pictured chords. You do need to know the song before you play it, because there aren't any strum patterns. But if you're like me, and know all of his stuff, you'll have little problem playing along.
My only wish is that the chords were printed on each page of the song. The chords are only on the first page of each song, therefore when you turn the page to play on, you have to memorize the chord names or flip back and forth to see them. There are some songs that have quite a few chords where this problem is most evident.
I still recommend the book! It's a joy to play and sing to.

Amazing book, a must have for all Jason Mraz fans

Got this book for my girlfriend, she is a huge fan of jason's music. It is not a beginner's book, but after a bit of practice I'm sure you would end up singing all Mraz's songs for sure :D. Maybe you are missing the latests hits from recent albums, but you have most of the hits from previous releases. A great buy for sure!, I ended up buying another for my brother :D

Someone who understands it as far is possibel

The Cloud of Unknowing is a classical on christian mysticism. It is, with Saint John of the Cross, the Pseudo-Dyonisius, and a few others, one of the best ways to somehow understand what mysticism. I say "somehow", because the highest mysticism is a contact (through love) with the Transcendence (God). Understanding the real mysticism is not common, you have to have some experience of it or at least have a kind of "feeling" for it. Well, the author of this book, William Johnston, knows very well (again, as far it is possible) what he is talking about. His book should be rated as one excellent work on The Cloud of Unknowing. So, if you want some introduction before reading The Cloud of Unknowing itself, this book by William Johnston is certainly an excellent one.

A classic book similar to "TTL Cookbook"

My brother had copies of CMOS cookbook and TTL cookbook in 1980s and I read most of them when I was 12-14 years old (he is a year older). After that each of us designed our own digital clock. My brother used 7 segments while I used LEDs for an analog representation of clock. Finding the ICs from the market was a bit difficult in Iran (where I lived) at the time but we eventually built many circuits and even produced and sold some.

Years later I started my undergraduate studies in electronics engineering and almost all the time I was the top student in digital, logic and microprocessor courses.

Being a computer science researcher now, I think this book and a few others achieved their purpose by creating extreme interest to electronics, digital circuits and computers in me and thousands of others.

...This was just an easier way of expressing my opinion.

This book has been absolutely crucial to my GCSE and A Level studies, as its simplified datasheets and useful information aboout how to use the ICs are exactly what you need for designing small circuits on the component level.

Although, yes, you can get all this and more for free on the internet, the book is smaller than a computer, and is right by you with all the information in one place.

It certainly has its place in my library.

Wonderful Continuing Story

The story of Prince Mael and his angelic lover Cian is fantastic! This is the third episode in the series and it continues the growth storyline. I can't wait for the next book.
