a concise collection of truly useful advice, complete with concrete recommendations

I like the six stages that Meyer identifies in learning the language. I immediately identified myself with her description of an "Upper Beginner", and found the corresponding list of suggested materials helpful for my current learning situation.

I also like the "Potential reward" suggestions at the end of each level. They're like an unexpected dessert at the end of a tough day, but could also be great for setting up external motivation for yourself at the beginning of a language learning push.

Finally, I appreciate her advice on how to use textbooks. I find that many people do not know how to use a textbook for self-study, perhaps because they've always been guided through them by teachers. I have found myself naturally exploring and figuring out my own way to use my textbooks, and my resulting method comes pretty close to what Meyer recommends. [Essentially, you should pay attention to what's happening in your mind and do whatever you feel you need in order to cement the new word or grammar concept.]

Overall this is a handy guide for Mandarin learners at any level. It's a concise collection of truly useful advice, complete with concrete recommendations for all sorts of language learning resources.

This is a great source of links, tips and tricks, learning material etc. Judith is a real polyglot. She`s fluent in more than 10 langauges, among them Mandarin. So...she knows a thing or two about studying languages. Get her booklet and follow her advice! It will certainly speed up the process of becoming fluent in Chinese!

Chuah Guat Eng s first novel more than satisfies our expectations of that suave literary species, the 'unputdownable'; -- but it is much more than a stylish thriller. As we follow the first-person narrator s progress in feeling for the murder clues, we get clues of another ilk as well, of such complex quality that as the plot thickens, the narrative blooms. Soon we are led into a parallel realm of discovery, filled with the rich reverberations of personal odyssey; .... And we are on to the fact that the thriller structure, which the author wields with so light a touch, comes away in one tug as a stage prop, a play within a play .... It is a novel of protean form, more postmodern than at first appears, in which the author accesses the world s imagination through two or more of its fondest habits, the thriller and the film. And then gives it a lot more. These are not props of narration but metaphor, the features of an inward landscape. Yet in the end it is not even this which makes it the most accomplished Malaysian novel to date, a new and cultured voice, in a society in which fiction has basically taken its own sweet time, for all the plethora of talent demonstrated in the short story form, and the passionate communally sourced novels.... It is the created world of the novel, which leaves the reader with a definite feeling of depth, weight, sorrow and maturity, caused by the passing of time, the strain of events, birth and death, the sense of life, of growth, which gives to a society the gift of seeing itself, of phrasing its experience, of recording itself at the level of the massive landscape of culture and spirit without which politics must fail. --Jun Mo, Far Eastern Economic Review

As a mystery story, Echoes of Silence is admirably crafted. This is no mean achievement. A mere entertainment the murder story may be, but it requires great cleverness to manufacture. I find myself wondering if this mystery novel is not as good as a good Christie and far better than most detective stories I have read. ... By now I am postponing other things and eating quickly so that I can get back to it. At the end ... I turn back to earlier pages to appreciate the technique that kept me in suspense. It s worthy of an accomplished mystery writer, incredible for a first-timer. But ... is Chuah Guat Eng to be just that, the Malaysian Agatha? No. For a long time before the end I was aware that Echoes of Silence is far more than a mystery novel, that it in fact has achieved what I thought was impossible. Not all its events are related to the murder. The others are part of another pattern, which has been there from the opening pages. And I can see how this has been done. The time shifts, from today to the Seventies, then to the Forties, and back again intermittently, have kept us constantly in three different but related worlds. The leisurely pace has allowed for the serious novel to develop with the mystery story. And the quiet style has authentically, and seemingly effortlessly, described a variety of experiences life on a pig farm, in a small town, in a rubber planter's bungalow before the war and 30 years later. They have all combined to make Echoes of Silence an intellectual as well as a tender novel about love. If Chuah s second novel, already announced as Days of Change, should be as entertaining, intelligent, and well crafted as her first, its publication will be a national literary event! --Ted Dorall, New Straits Times

About the Author
Chuah Guat Eng was born in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan in 1943. She received her early education at Methodist Girls School, Klang and Victoria Institution, Kuala Lumpur. She read English Literature at University of Malaya Kuala Lumpur and German Literature at Ludwig-Maximilian University, Munich. Most of her working life has been spent in the corporate world. Echoes of Silence, first published in 1994, is her first novel. Other published works are Tales from the Baram River (2001), a collection of Sarawak folktales retold for children, and The Old House and Other Stories (2008), a collection of stories written and published in various publications and anthologies between 1992 and 2002. In 2008, she received her PhD from the National University of Malaysia (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), Bangi for her thesis, From Conflict to Insight: A Zen-based Reading Procedure for the Analysis of Fiction. She works part-time as a corporate communications consultant and occasionally runs lecture courses at universities. She is currently working on her second novel.

Engaging novel of first rank

The (fictional) Anglicised Chinese Malaysian Ai Lian narrates an onion-layered account of discovery and self-discovery in her complex relationship with Michael Templeton, heir to the eponymous sprawling estate in Ulu Banir, Malaya, where things are not as they appear. Beautifully crafted prose describing Ai Lian's agonizing self-examination will reward readers who enjoy introspective novels. The plot is onion-layered, somewhat evocative of Rashomon, and its denouement satisfying. The setting is pre-independence Malaya, a time when British-run estates were tropical replicas of genteel England with concessions to the heat, humidity and local mores. It is evident that the author has assiduously researched the milieu of those times, impressively informed by her Peranaksn background. A novel of first rank, a great read, with timeless themes. Its sequel, "Days of Change", has recently appeared.

Compelling reading

This is a well-crafted, highly readable novel, accessible to all interested in literary fiction. As an added benefit, the book is written in the form of a mystery, making it interesting and fun for mystery lovers as well.

The book is set in Malaysia and written by a Malaysian writer, making it a rarity for English-language readers.

Through this book, one sees the development of interesting characters and how they react to conflicts and challenges. One also learns something of life in Malaysia, and the events that surrounded the 1940s and 1950s in Malaysia.

All in all, this pleasurable book merits greater readership.

Readers will want to read the sequel to this book by Ms. Chuah.

Jeronica deployed with me and her story is like that of many soldiers. I had many things get me down and get me angry. I'm glad she got her story down on paper. She's one reason I stay in so I can stand next to a soldier and maybe see them smile during troubled times.

This book has only been published since the 8th of Jan and today is the 10th. I am an Amazon Prime account holder so I was able to get my book within two days. When I seen the title, I thought, okay this is the story about a soldier and reading the back I wanted to see what it was about. It automatically grasped my attention. Honestly, this young author is one that is very courageous in her step towards telling her story. If only others would be so mighty to do so then the world could possibly be a better place. There were times that I laughed and times that I cried, but I enjoyed every moment of it and cannot wait to read what happens next. I am a fan.

Extraordinary series. Very highly recommended.

“Just a Bit Confusing” is yet another novel of The Straight Guys series that left me with a contented sigh and a smile on my face. With her amazing and engaging writing style and character building Alessandra Hazard is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and I have found each book of The Straight Guys series to be absolutely captivating.

“Just a Bit Confusing” is the story of Ryan, Zach’s brother from the previous book, and his lifelong best friend James. James has been in love with his straight best friend for as long as he can remember. He loves Ryan with all his heart and soul but the pain of loving someone who doesn’t feel the same way about you can be almost unbearable, devastating. After years of dealing with unrequited love he has finally realized that he wants Ryan so badly he'll take any piece of him he can get. In some ways though, getting what he has wanted for so long leaves him even more broken and vulnerable than before.

Ryan is the solid rock who's always been there for Jamie. He considers Jamie part of his family,like a brother. When faced with Jamie’s true feelings he suffers too. He feels confused and awful knowing he is the reason his Jamie hurts.

Their relationship is beautiful, intense, passionate, emotional, and hot.I laughed, I cried, and as always, I had a great time reading this book.

Once again Alessandra Hazard gives us another heart stopping romance.I can hardly wait for the next book to come out. Keep them coming. I’ll keep buying and reading.

Painful to experience

While this series is absolutely fantastic, I found it painful to read this story because of the emotional impact. Jamie is rich and titled while Ryan isn't but they have been best friends since childhood. Both are drop dead gorgeous men who are as close as anyone can be to each other. But, Ryan has a girlfriend and Jamie is in love with Ryan. Characters from previous books are here....Tristan is with Ryan's brother Zach, and Gabriel shows up at parties. Tristan's biological father is revealed along with his half brother and it creates some emotional distress.
What was painful was experiencing the emotional impact that the knowledge that the man he loves is with a woman. What is painful is watching the relationship fall apart because of this unrequited love. What is painful was seeing the confused Ryan floundering in his life with the knowledge that Jamie is gone because he can't stand to be around Ryan and not be loved. And it's painful to know that Jamie follows Chelsea football...Great story about great characters with real life experiences and emotions.

Aww. I love Jaime. He's spent years in love with his best friend Ryan. Not able to tell him, he smiles through his heartache, as he sees Ryan with his new girlfriend that Ryan says he's in love with. He's set on continuing this way because he knows Ryan is straight. But then things come to a head and Jaime just can't keep his feelings in anymore and he confesses how he really feels.

Ryan is shocked and upset that his best friend is hurting because of him. He's straight, but he can't stand Jaime being upset. He doesn't want Jaime to see him with his girlfriend. He doesn't want to turn Jaime away, but at the same time he really does see him as a brother. He has to reconcile that while he may see Jaime as a brother, Jaime sees Ryan as the love of his life. And Ryan's never been able to say no to Jaime...

Ryan admits to himself that if Jaime was a girl he would be with him instead of his girlfriend. He does everything he can not to hurt Jaime, but the situation is just too much for both of them. Ryan can't help feeling some resentment toward Jaime for making him feel guilty over his girlfriend, and Jaime can't live with knowing that he's keeping Ryan from the life that he wants. Jaime finally forces himself to walk away.and his absence leaves Ryan with a big hole in his life, one that only Jaime is able to fill.

A Must have book!!!

I own half a dozen books on hvac. I have to say, I got lucky on this one. It is the encyclopedia of hvac that I've alway wanted. I consider myself a apprentice/journeyman and this book has mostly everything I need to know right now. The author speaks so plainly that anyone can understand it. No mumble jumbo. Just ton's of infomation, from superheat, to commercial boxes, to residential to basics, tools, refrigerants. Did you know that r502 may have a dip tube in the tank? Truely, I will read every chapter in this book. It may not be the only book you will ever need, but it it clearly a 'must have' for every person learning the trade, and then some! Endless informative remarks like, '..be sure there is a load on the evap...' when doing this test....etc. It's just full of stuff you just gotta know and stuff you want to know. Myself, I am expanding into the commercial world of refrigeration and want to know more! And this book is it! No fluff,,, all hard core, straight talk!

A great primer and reference text for simulation modelling

Whether you are attempting Monte Carlo simulation for the first time or have plenty of practical experience, Vose's book is the best text available.

Vose has done a great job providing a brief but solid introduction to probability and statistics. It also serves as a great practical reference for the details and applications of all of the commonly used probability distribution functions.

He expertly summarizes each of the main steps a modeller will face in developing a model, providing very practical examples with helpful figures illustrating exactly how to implement the example in a spreadsheet.

The introduction could be improved by describing the context of his book, largerly directed towards cost analysis of projects, in the very broad field of Quantiative Risk Analysis. If I could add a section to the book, I would devote a chapter to common errors committed by the novice modeller. Minor criticisms aside, I do not hesitate in recommending this book as a reference for experts. I think it provides the fastest route up the learning curve for the novice modeller.

An excellent introduction to risk analysis

Vose's book "Quantitative Risk Analysis; A Guide to Monte Carlo Simulation Modelling" is an excellent introduction to practical quantitative risk analysis.

The book is written in a clear and concise style, refreshing to read and easy to assimilate. The text is practical and techniques are illustrated with useful, practical examples.The book has proven immensely useful in my work.

The text is marred by a number of typographical errors, 9 by my count. These typos are a reflection on the typesetting and editing rather than on the technical value of this excellent book.

I have no hesitation in recommending Vose's "Quantitative Risk Analysis" to anyone who wants to learn about the application of Monte Carlo simulation modelling to problems of risk analysis.

An excellent guide and primer - clear and concise.

This text provides an excellent primer for those interested in the field of Monte Carlo modelling, but without a strong background in mathematics/statistics. The text is extremely concise and well expressed, and leads the reader through each aspect of quantitative risk analysis without burdening him/her with unnecessary detail nor explanation.
I believe that this book will prove to be tremendously useful for all those approaching the subject of quantitative risk analysis, or those who wish to be able to better understand the results of analyses conducted by others. Sam Beckett, Massey University, New Zealand

Hot combination

There's something about exotic locales, sexy people, and mysterious billionaires that combine to form a perfect storm of hotness. Sean Brandon has a way of creating these stories that involve people getting in touch with their passionate side while on vacation. His descriptions of the Mediterranean setting makes you feel like you're there and that's saying nothing of how wild and crazy Wayne and Sandi get while staying at billionaire Armando's. If you're into swingers, "Madrid Affair with the Billionaire" is definitely for you.

Hot, Erotic, and Atmospheric

Everybody like sex. But sex in exotic splendor is even better! I loved the way this story pulled together deep erotic passion with a glamorous atmosphere along the Mediterranean coast.

What begins as a break from a high level corporate conference becomes a decadent swinging tryst in a billionaire's luxurious abode. Julieta and Armando are more than a match for the unsuspecting Wayne and Sandi. Money can buy happiness, it seems, and it can also buy some intense real world experience in pure pleasure.

If you enjoy swinger stories, you'll like this book. The emotional and sensual heat cranks up high between Wayne and Sandi, but it shoots higher still when a new couple enters the picture. This story left me tingly and numb, passing off to my dreams with the gentle warm sea lapping at my ears. Pick it up!

Very sexy, very fun, but made all the better by a great lead in. Learning ahead that Armando wanted to seduce Sandi and Wayne made it all the more exciting watching it go down. I love build up, and you can't get much better than that!

The scenes are HOT, all coming together for the final foursome that will rock your world.

Another great job by Sean Brandon!
